Travel TikToker accuses Mexican restaurant of charging $150 for eggs and fruit: 'Robbery'

A travel vlogger took to TikTok to claim that a Tulum, Mexico, restaurant charged her and some friends $150 each for eggs and fruit and $75 for a cup of black coffee.

Buy, sell or hold? How to decide what to do with a plummeting stock

TikTok user Tania (@tanialov3s) posts spectacular videos of her travels every day. In one video, she explained that she quit her finance job at the end of 2021 and has been traveling full-time ever since. The plan to make such a major life change took her three years to complete.

In February, Tania documented her move to Mexico, where she’s been traveling for the last few months and documenting the beautiful views and great food. But in her most popular upload to date, Tania claimed that a breakfast in Tulum cost her three times her allotted daily budget.

See this tiny New York apartment get an impressive redesign in one day with a $1,000 budget:

“POV: You are in Tulum and you thought a simple breakfast of fruits and omelette was 150 Pesos … when in reality it’s 150 USD [per] person and your budget for the day was around 50 USD,” Tania wrote in the TikTok’s text overlay.

In a follow-up video responding to a comment, Tania alleged that the restaurant was Jungle Cuisine, which describes itself as a “hidden jungle restaurant” on Instagram.

“I wasn’t prepared,” Tania said about the final cost. “To be charged that and it was less food, I was not expecting that.”

Tania also replied to another comment in a separate video that claimed the restaurant is “supposed to announce the price in Pesos” and that restaurants are “obliged by law to use the local currency.”

“This comment here is nothing but facts,” Tania said. “It wasn’t until my friend jokingly said [to the waiter], ‘It’s Pesos, right? Not U.S.?’ and all of us, our jaws literally dropped. Like, are you kidding me?”

According to the Federal Consumer Protection Law in Mexico, items “shall be expressed in the Spanish language and its price in Mexican currency, in a readable and readily understandable manner.” Prices and descriptions “may also be expressed in other language or measurement system” — but only in addition to the Spanish language and Mexican currency.

Tania also claimed that the waiter told the group that this was a common complaint that had been raised to the managers and owners before.

“I guess we’re not the only ones to experience this,” she said. “For me, it was the lack of transparency — if you know what the price is going to be, just announce it.”

“That’s an armed robbery,” one commenter wrote about the cost.

“Everyone saying ‘you should have clarified’ really are living the high life,” another said. “Most people would assume eggs and fruit are 150 pesos, not $150 USD.”

“If you can support local restaurants, food will always be amazing at reasonable prices,” Tania concluded in a comment.
