With spring comes flowers, longer days and warmer weather. At Trader Joe’s, the season also comes with a slew of new snacks, desserts, pantry staples and quick dinners. Read on for our favorite new picks of the month, courtesy of our grocery store boo. Here’s what’s new at Trader Joe’s in May, from crispy Thai banana fritters to vegan spinach and cashew ravioli.
1. Organic Poppy Seed Dressing
Whether your salad stars baby spinach, stone fruit, radicchio, berries or carrots, this creamy, zingy, crunchy vinaigrette will pair seamlessly. Might we suggest using it instead of mayo the next time you make coleslaw?
2. Artichoke Timbales
If you're a fan of spinach artichoke dip, this app is right up your alley. It's predominantly made of Italian-grown artichokes (69 percent, to be exact), which are filled with mozzarella and Grana Padano cheeses, spinach, garlic and lots of spices.
3. Buttermilk Brined Half Chicken
Why is buttermilk such a popular chicken marinade, you ask? Its acidity tenderizes the meat, allowing it to retain its juiciness while it cooks. This pre-packaged (and pre-seasoned) gem allows you to skip the overnight soak and cook it ASAP.
4. Gluten-Free Cheese Ravioli
Because wheat should never stand between you and pasta—especially when it's filled with ricotta, mozz, asiago, Parmesan and Romano cheeses. Instead of flour, the dough is made with eggs, rice, corn and cauliflower.
5. Sparkling White Tea with Pomegranate Juice
You'd never know this fizzy bev only contains 10 calories per can, thanks to naturally sweet pomegranate juice. Add vodka to create a quick cocktail or top your glass with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or strawberry sherbet for a float.
6. Fancy Cheese Crunchies
It may sound like an oxymoron, but trust: This is a next-level snack. The crunchies start with a base of heirloom corn that's spiked with cheddar and Parmesan cheeses. And for the pièce de résistance, a dusting of black truffle salt.
7. Crispy Crunchy Peanut Butter Cookies
You've tried the chocolate chip version. Here, chocolate is swapped for a trifecta of blanched peanuts, dry roasted peanuts and peanut butter. Dare we use these in place of vanilla wafers in our next batch of banana pudding?
8. Chimichurri Sauce
You're already famous for your grilled flank steak. Just wait until your guests try it slathered in this herby Latin sauce (which tastes just as epic on al pastor pork, roasted sweet potatoes and grilled shrimp, BTW).
9. Gluten-Free Double Chocolate Muffins
Yup, we'd leap out of bed for one of these. Instead of AP flour, the muffins are made with a blend of white and brown rice flours, potato starch and tapioca starch. But the real secret to their magic is sweet cream buttermilk and sour cream in the batter, which turn them impossibly moist.
10. Tres Leches Cake
Sure, sponge cake is tasty as is. But it's about a million times more decadent and delicious when soaked in a bath of heavy cream, evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk. Did we mention it's topped with whipped cream to boot?
11. Vegan Spinach & Cashew Ravioli
Egg-free pasta + creamy cashew "cheese" + crispy breadcrumbs = a vegan dinner for the books. We'd smother them in your favorite jarred pesto, if we were you.
12. Non-Dairy Oat Creamer Brown Sugar Flavor
13. Organic Vegan Nacho Dip
Vegans have counted on cashew and coconut to stand in for cheese for a long time, but even carnivores will swoon over this savory dip. Scarf it down straight from the fridge or warm it up and top it with chorizo-spiced tofu crumble.
14. Ranch Seasoning Blend
Consider this your new go-to popcorn (and pizza and chicken and pasta...) seasoning. The buttermilk powder base is zhuzhed up with garlic, onion, dill, black pepper, chives and green onion to replicate ranch dressing's signature zesty flavor.
15. Thai Banana Fritters
We feel a luxury banana split coming on. This vegan treat is gooey on the inside and crisp on the outside, since the bananas are enrobed in sweet coconut batter and fried.
