I am very serious about the interior design of my apartment. Like many people, after moving into my first one bedroom last year, I became obsessed with every item that entered my home, from the perfect vintage couch to the antique table that I use for dining. My bedroom, however, was another story, as I decided to focus on collecting pieces for my living space before prioritizing furniture swaps for pieces I already owned.

The problem, which I learned about six months into my interior design project, was that I was starting to hate my bed. There wasn't anything wrong with it, per se, but I had owned it for over a decade and it looked a bit dated in comparison to pieces that I had acquired more recently. One lesson you learn when getting serious about your design is not to pick items that look very of-the-moment because they will become visually tiring. Who wants that? Not me. So I decided it was time to refresh the focal point of my bedroom, which of course, resulted in weeks of obsessing and scouring for the right piece.

The final decision: the much-lauded Jenni Kayne Pacific Bed.

Now, it's no secret that I love Jenni Kayne— the fisherman sweater and the Cooper cardigan are permanent staples in my wardrobe— but seeing as my interior design aesthetic is slightly more eclectic, with a mix of antique, contemporary, and mid-century modern pieces infused throughout, at first the Jenni Kayne home collection did not come to mind.

After doing considerable research on the best platform beds around, I quickly realized that the Jenni Kayne Home pieces don't just subscribe to the brand's signature Pacific natural aesthetic, but work seamlessly in many design schemes.

With unfussy, classic design and thoughtful specs, I was certain that the Pacific bed would work well with my slightly-thicker mattress, which can be a bit too high for certain other platform bed styles. Most importantly, it is easily complemented by the mid-century modern wood and contemporary metallic and glass pieces I already had in my bedroom. Further more, the platform is high enough with my mattress that my nightstand isn't taller in height, which is an interior pet peeve of mine, and influenced my decision.

Another specific desire that the Pacific bed perfectly fulfills is that, while it is a platform bed, it's not too low to the ground. I have high ceilings, so I didn't want to have too much empty space above the bed frame, and more importantly, I don't feel like I have to bend over to get into bed: A major plus for someone who suffers from a lot of aches and pains in their back. Similarly, the headboard isn't super high, but tall enough so that I don't bonk my head every time I lean back.

I know what you're thinking, "what about under bed storage?" Here's the thing: being able to tuck things under your bed is great in theory, but often just leads to a bit of unsightly clutter that you have to work to hide. With that storage, you also get a lot of dust bunnies. (Don't try to tell me that you're regularly moving things you store under your bed to thoroughly vacuum.) In other words, I don't feel like the lack of room for storage under my Pacific bed is a loss.

A few more notes about this piece: It's well constructed and weighty, but not so heavy that it's hard to move when you are cleaning. The natural linen upholstery is a bit of neutral texture that adds warmth and is a wonderful pairing with the other colors and textures in my room, from the sienna velvet and wood chair that belonged to my great-great grandmother, to my Persian area rug, or the bright turquoise jewelry box that I have on display on my dresser. It just works, and I knew it would from the minute I saw it.

True to the Jenni Kayne experience, beyond the design, the delivery process was really speedy and efficient, and the white glove service included putting the bed together, which took no time at all. From top to bottom, the delivery, the design, and the quality all remind why the Jenni Kayne brand name carries the weight that it does. The best part is, I know that I'll love this piece forever because of its simplicity. And should I decide to infuse a few more pieces into the space that are from different aesthetics, I have confidence that no matter what, they will meld with my timeless Pacific bed. If you're considering a new bed, this is my candidate of choice.
