Gabby Thomas ran straight for Olympic gold at the Paris 2024 Games—and then straight into the arms of her boyfriend, Spencer McManes.
McManes was in the stands cheering on Thomas as she secured the gold medal in the women’s 200-meter dash on August 6, finishing with a time of 21.83.
Thomas previously talked about having an “empowering” support system as she headed into the Olympics. “For me, being surrounded by people that are uplifting and supportive and empowering really fuels me, and it definitely has got me to where I am today,” she told NBC. “I have always been surrounded by that kind of energy and that type of support system.”

They started dating in 2022.
The two reportedly began dating in the fall of 2022. At the time, they were both living in Austin, Texas, where Thomas earned a master’s degree in public health at the University of Texas Health Science Center.
He played football at Yale.
Similarly to Thomas—who completed her undergraduate studies at Harvard—McManes earned his education at another Ivy League school. He was a student at Yale University, where he also played on the school’s football team as a quarterback. He ultimately graduated with a degree in political science and government.
He supported Gabby at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
McManes was amongst the crowd roaring for Thomas as she crossed the finish line for the women’s 200-meter final on August 6. Afterward, Thomas met McManes on the bleachers, where the two shared a hug and a quick selfie.

When the runner qualified for the 2024 Olympics, Lori penned a sweet note to her son’s girlfriend on Instagram. “No words can describe these USA Olympic Trials. Just incredible,” she wrote. “We are SO PROUD to be TEAM GABBY. That win yesterday was hard! Incredible talent on the line. We are so happy Gabby will represent our great country on Team USA.
