As someone who loves, and I mean loves, a high-tech beauty device, you might be surprised to find out that my day to day skincare routine is unfussy. Because I have rosacea, which I treat with the help of my dermatologist and prescriptions, I really only use an all-rounder serum and then a moisturizing boost, and, of course, SPF. I do a mask or two a week, and if I'm feeling super indulgent, I'll add in an essence. But as far as things go, I keep my routine consistent. And there's one piece of goodness that has become so integral to my nighttime routine, I'm comfortable saying that I will never stray. The little jar in question: May Lindstrom's Blue Cocoon.

May I just say upfront? They really nailed the name of this solid facial oil concentrate: a yummy cocoon is exactly what it is. But before I get of myself, let me explain what it is and how I use it as my very last skincare step every night. This pot of goodness consists of a blend of oils (all of which are organic, fair trade, or even wild-harvested) and the heavy-hitter blue tansy. Not only does the latter give the balm to oil salve its striking blue color, but it also has an antioxidant called chamazulene and a-bisabolol, which are said to have anti-histamine, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and anti-microbial properties.

When you have rosacea and sensitive, reactive skin, those words carry a lot of weight. After months of testing before working in a prescription azaleic acid and going back to tretinoin, I can honestly say that this lovely jar really helped tame the heat and inflammation that I experience in my face, particularly around my cheeks.

A note: while this formulation does contain shea butter, I did not find this clogging in the slightest. In fact, I actually find this to be quite lightweight for the amount of hydration it gives. Additionally, alternative medicine has touted that blue tansy can be helpful to treat anxiety or insomnia, and while I haven't tested against those claims, I can say that melting the balm in my hands and applying it to damp skin, inhaling that lovely, light scent really has become a moment of meditation for me that helps me relax and unwind. For that reason alone, I think the blue cocoon is more than just a beauty elixir.

Other things to note: I've had my jar open for about 3 months and change and I've barely made a dent, but I do see results. Overall my skin is much calmer, much less splotchy, and I found that even before I worked in some prescription actives, the red rash-like inflammation I get on my forehead like clockwork each month was far less noticeable. Bonus: when I did work in the actives, I experienced virtually no irritation or barrier sensitivity, which I chalk up to the brilliance of the blue cocoon. As a rosacea gal, I'm hooked for life.
