Sodalite is found in many locations around the world, with particularly large outputs from Canada, Namibia, the United States, Afghanistan, Bolivia, Brazil, Greenland, Guina, India, Myanmar, Norway, Russia, and Scotland. One popular variety of sodalite is called hackmanite.

The History of Sodalite Crystals

According to Fire Mountain Gems, the use of sodalite dates back to around 2,600 B.C., when the Caral peoples in modern-day Peru and the Tiwanaku peoples in modern-day Bolivia both traded for it. According to Caldera Gem, the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Mayans also used sodalite.

More recently, Europeans later “discovered” sodalite in Greenland in 1811, and it became widely used in jewelry and decor after large deposits were found in Canada in 1891. Sodalite is sometimes called “Princess Blue” because the Canadian deposits were discovered during a visit from members of the British royal family. Additionally, sodalite is sometimes called “poor man’s lapis” of its visual similarities to lapis lazuli.

Sodalite is traditionally associated with intellectualism and communication. It’s thought to improve clarity, self-expression, intuition, insight, wisdom, emotional stability, and calm. Sodalite is frequently recommended for artists, writers, and other creatives. It’s even sometimes called “the Poet’s Stone.”

How to Work with Sodalite Crystals

There are several ways you can work with sodalite. First, you can simply wear it, put it in your pocket, or place it around your home or workplace (for example, on your desk) and then soak up its ~vibes~. How to Care for Sodalite Crystals

Sodalite crystals are tough but can scratch easily; they typically rank 5.5-6 on the Mohs hardness scale, making them softer than quartz (7-7.5) and topaz (8), but harder than fluorite (4) and calcite (3). Be careful to store sodalite apart from your other crystals so they don’t get scratched by your quartz! To clean sodalite, the International Gem Society recommends using warm water, mild detergent, and a soft brush.
