“How many times do we need to say ‘dry vagina’ before we’re all comfortable with it?” This was the question of the day when Oprah sat down in front of a live audience to discuss the current state of women’s health—from the shame we experience about menopause, sex, and, yes, dry vaginas, to the myths and misinformation that have dogged women through history (for example, that men need more sex than women. False!).
Oprah was joined by Elizabeth Comen, MD, a breast cancer oncologist, women’s health specialist, and author of All in Her Head. Comen spoke about her experience seeing patients who kick off their appointments with an apology: “I see this daily. A number of women say, ‘I’m so sorry for sweating.’ Or ‘I’m so sorry for what this scar looks like.’ Or ‘I’m so sorry that I didn’t shave today.’ Something is not right there.” She then fielded audience questions on subjects like how to deepen intimacy, the necessary health checks for women 50 and over, and menopause-related anxiety.
