See the Legendary Cast That Makes Up 'Lawmen: Bass Reeves'
There's nothing like throwing on a Western TV show to watch with your family or friends. That's especially true when Taylor Sheridan has something to do with it! So, you can bet we're excited to dive right into Lawmen: Bass Reeves, the upcoming series in which Sheridan is an executive producer.
The series will follow the true story of Bass Reeves, the first Black U.S. Marshall west of the Mississippi, and iconic lawman of his time. While the story in itself will be an exciting one to watch, the cast and characters have also caught our attention! (And you're sure to recognize a name or two!) Fans of Yellowstone quickly fell for the first season of 1883, which told the origin of how the Duttons pioneered the American Wild West. While it's now confirmed that Lawmen: Bass Reeves is not a prequel of 1883, it's still safe to call the series a Yellowstone spinoff. And as with the other spinoffs, some big names are attached to this upcoming series—David Oyelowo and Dennis Quaid, to name a few!
So, before you tune in to the premiere of Lawman: Bass Reeves, which airs on Sunday, November 5, 2023 on Paramount+, check out this list of cast and characters.
David Oyelowo as Bass Reeves
The first confirmed actor in the series was David Oyelowo, who will play the titular Bass Reeves. Chances are you recognize Oyelowo from his work in acclaimed movies like Selma and The Butler.
Back in 2022, the British actor posted a video of himself testing his cowboy skills on a horse (presumably at Sheridan's famous cowboy camp). "One of the BEST things about being an actor is preparing for a role a million miles from your own experience and skill set. I love my job!"
Dennis Quaid as Deputy U.S. Marshall Sherrill Lynn
Parent Trap actor Dennis Quaid will work alongside Oyelowo in the role of Deputy U.S. Marshall Sherrill Lynn.
Quaid has done some previous television work but is best known for blockbuster movies that range from The Big Easy to The Day After Tomorrow. In his own Instagram post about being cast in the show, Quaid wrote that he was "honored" to join Oyelowo on the project.
Donald Sutherland as Judge Isaac Parker
Donald Sutherland will be playing Judge Isaac Parker, who was also a real person. In fact, he's said to have "tried 13,490 cases"over the course of his career!
If you've watched The Hunger Games, then you certainly recognize Sutherland as the corrupt President Snow. On a lighter note, he's also played roles in Pride & Prejudice and M*A*S*H.
Moses Brings Plenty as Minco Dodge
Minco Dodge is said to be a friend of Bass Reeves, and a trusted member of the Choctaw tribe. Not much is known about the character so far, but we're excited to see how he ties in!
If you're a Yellowstone fan, then you definitely know Moses Brings Plenty as his character "Mo." But that's not all he's been in! He's recently played a role in Dead Man's Hand (starring alongside Cole Hauser), and also has parts in The Cherokee Word for Water and Rez Bomb.
Barry Pepper as Esau Pierce
Esau Pierce is described as the head honcho when it comes to the Cherokee Mounted Rifles.
Barry Pepper is definitely a familiar face to the big-screen! His most notable roles include Saving Private Ryan, 61, The Green Mile and True Grit. Safe to say he's a natural when it comes to acting in some tough stories!
Demi Singleton as Sally Reeves
Demi Singleton also posted that she was "so excited to be a part of telling this story!" The young actress will play Bass Reeves daughter, Sally.
Singleton's biggest movie so far was the award-winning biopic movie King Richard, where she played a young Serena Williams. But her acting creds go way back—at age 10, she was cast in the Broadway musical School of Rock and The Lion King less than a year later. Before leaving that musical, she joined the cast of the TV show, Godfather of Harlem.
Lauren E. Banks as Jennie Reeves
Standing alongside Bass Reeves is his wife, Jennie, portrayed by Lauren E. Banks. Jennie is described as "strong and fiercely loyal" by Variety, but little else is known about the character.
Banks graduated from the Yale School of Drama and recently starred in City on a Hill and Gaslit.
Joaquina Kalukango as Esme
Joaquina Kalukango will play Esme, "a former enslaved woman who is as good as family with the Reeves’ and also has some different ideas about the future," according to Deadline.
Kalukango is a relative newcomer but has accumulated quite the line of credits with the TV show Lovecraft Country and the movie One Night in Miami. She also won a Tony award recently for the Broadway musical Paradise Square. Knowing Taylor Sheridan, she might be given the chance to sing on the show!
Ryan O'Nan as Darrell Dolliver
But wait, Bass Reeves needs some bad guys to track down! That's where Ryan O'Nan comes in as Darrell Dolliver, one-half of the pair of Dolliver outlaws Reeves is trying to bring to justice.
O'Nan has done it all—he's an actor, writer, and director, but he's best known as King George in the show Queen of the South and Donno on Big Sky.
Lonnie Chavis as Arthur Mayberry
Just look at that face! Per Deadline, Lonnie Chavis's character is "a sweet young boy with eyes for the Reeves' daughter Sally."
Fans of the hit show This is Us watched Chavis grow up as Randall Pearson (he started at age 9!).
Rob Morgan as Ramsey
Little is known about Rob Morgan's character Ramsey, but Deadline reported that his character is "a once-strong man who has been broken by time."
What we know about Morgan is that he is a seasoned actor and took the spot of #20 on the New York Times list "The 25 Greatest Actors of the 21st Century." Notable recent roles include Hap Jackson in Mudbound, Dr. Teddy Oglethorpe in Don't Look Up, and chief Powell on Stranger Things.
Justin Hurtt-Dunkley as Ike
Ike is the third deputy U.S. Marshall and he is played by Justin Hurtt-Dunkley.
Hurtt-Dunkley had a big break with the hit detective mini-series, Mare of Easttown, where he played a modern-day officer of the law.
Shea Whigham as Col. George Reeves
Word is Shea Whigham will guest star as another bad guy, described as the “upright and incredibly cruel master of Bass Reeves,” per Variety.
Whigham is best known for playing Elias "Eli" Thompson in the series Boardwalk Empire, and has worked opposite Robert DeNiro, Anthony Hopkins, and Christian Bale, to name a few.
