Taking in a rescue can both open your heart and break it. That's because as much as you love your new pet, you'll also see glimpses of their old life — and it's not always pretty. Just take one woman who was absolutely heartbroken when she saw her rescue revert to some of its old ways.

The dog mama from Seattle, Washington noticed that her dog was doing something strange when they were outside recently.

Right away V could tell that her dog was acting oddly. Suddenly it clicked that she was reverting to old coping mechanisms.

"We just rescued this dog who's previous owner made her live outside," she explained in the onscreen caption. "It was sunny today so we hung out in the yard and she made herself comfortable in the dirt."

The clip shows the dog making herself a little dog bed out of the dirt in the yard and then a second clip shows her doing it on a bag of soil. Being the good dog mama that she was, V switched things up and got her good girl a dog bed to use instead.

People in the comments section were heartbroken. "I'M CRYING this poor baby. I don't know how people can be so cruel to animals," one person exclaimed. "There are definitely some breeds that do really well outside but I don't know how anyone could see her and think she's an outside dog," someone else pointed out. "The way her face lit up when she got on the bed made me burst into tears," another commenter admitted.

Should You Keep Your Dog Outside?

Some dogs might fare better outside the house, but most dogs do better inside. Technically, nothing may happen when a dog spends the night outside, but shifts in weather or other safety hazards can really put them at risk. In hot weather, dogs  can experience heat stroke. A sudden rain storm or snow can make their body temperatures drop dangerously low.

A dog outside all night won't have you there to watch them, so there's a chance they could choke on something they aren't meant to be eating or possibly ingest a poisonous plant.

But the most important reason why your dog should sleep in the house is because of you. Dogs crave human interaction and having you around will surely help them sleep better at night.

Just like this dog. It's clear that her mama has made all the difference.
