A Rare Peek Inside Meghan and Harry’s Montecito Mansion

While the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have valorously avoided previewing the interior of their home in Montecito, California, we just got a peek into one of the rooms. The couple sat down with Jane Pauley for a rare joint interview—their first in three years—that aired on CBS Sunday Morning on August 4. The shots reveal a look into a downstairs room of their house, and it’s a far cry from the spaces of Harry’s gilded, damask-lined youth.
A multihued throw that feels very Ralph Lauren sits perched atop a large white sofa, which is accented with yellow pillows. There’s a thin wood bench, and wood candleholders sit by a cross-back chair that offers a view out the window. A stipple-style lamp adds a playful energy to the room’s otherwise rustic ranch vibe. Other decor items that jumped out, despite the annoying background blur? A Mexican serape tapestry hung like a curtain on a nearby wall, a floral area rug in brown and cream, a ceramic bowl repurposed as a floor object, as well as a full-length mirror with (you guessed it!) a wooden frame that pushes the farmhouse aesthetic even further.
“The style is very California ranch,” interior designer Mark D. Sikes said. “The painted white finishes make the space feel fresh, yet you can see the textures of a ranch-style house. The wood tones of the furniture add warmth and feel inviting.” The bright textiles and patterns, Sikes adds, is exactly what makes the whole "Cali look" come together. “The patterned lamp shades and the striped throw are wonderful accessories that add life and personality to the space.”
The couple moved into their $14.6 million, nine-bedroom Montecito estate in the summer of 2020, after quitting royal life. Its Tuscan-inspired exteriors include a large pool, a tennis court, a chicken coop (aptly named “Archie’s Chicken Inn”), rose gardens, a teahouse, and other extravagances. The Duchess got candid about her residence in a recent cover story with The Cut, saying that it has been “calm” and “healing” and ultimately makes her “feel free.”
“We did everything we could to get this house,” she told the publication. “Because you walk in and go…joy. And exhale."
