  • A sequel to the 2004 comedy Dodgeball is on the way.

  • The original movie featured a memorable cameo from Lance Armstrong, pre-fall from grace.

  • Could Armstrong return for the sequel?

News broke this week that a sequel to the 2004 movie Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story—a project long promised (threatened?) by star Vince Vaughn—has gotten the green light, according to Variety. It’s been a while since we’ve seen Dodgeball, but we remember that it was funny. Really funny.

To remind ourselves just how funny, we of course had to pull up some clips. And we weren’t disappointed. It’s just as funny as we remembered it being, in that early aughts kind of way that doesn’t always hold up anymore.

Speaking of not holding up? Another thing we remembered while revisiting 2004 and Dodgeball is that none other than disgraced former pro-cyclist Lance Armstrong made a cameo. To lecture Vaughn’s character about quitting. No, we are not making this up.

When Armstrong finishes his speech, he slaps Vaughn’s character on the shoulder and says, “Good luck to you, Peter. I’m sure this decision won’t haunt you forever.”

To quote another gem of nostalgia, isn’t it ironic?

So far, Vaughn is the only member of the original Dodgeball cast who has signed on to the project as it moves into the “early development” phase. As William Hughes writes for the AV Club, “...we can only hope that it somehow involves Lance Armstrong returning for a second climactic pep talk to remind us all of what’s possible through hard work, determination, and nothing else.”

While Hughes was being purposefully ironic, we won’t be. Hey, Dodgeball 2 braintrust: Just say no. Resist the urge to recruit Armstrong for the sequel.
