Baking soda is a workhorse in the kitchen. The pantry staple is used for making fluffy cakes and muffins, cleaning cookware, tackling stubborn stains, and even washing produce. If that weren't enough, people are also increasingly drinking baking soda and water for health and fitness purposes.

"People are turning to the combination of baking soda and water as a home remedy for various health issues," said Lauren Manaker, registered dietician nutritionist. Baking soda mixed in water is being used to help with acid reflux and boost athletic performance. The concoction isn't new, but it's gained traction online in recent months. So does it work? And is it safe? Here's what you need to know about the viral baking soda water trend.

What Exactly Is Baking Soda?

Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, is an alkaline chemical compound. When mixed with acidic substances, it releases carbon dioxide, which causes baked goods to rise.

Why Are People Drinking Baking Soda And Water?

"While there are anecdotal claims about the benefits of drinking baking soda and water, scientific evidence is limited," said Manaker. "Some studies suggest that baking soda may indeed help with digestive discomfort and can enhance certain athletic performance through its buffering capacity."

Being alkaline, baking soda could help neutralize your stomach acids. This is why advocates claim that the baking soda and water mixture can alleviate symptoms of indigestion, heartburn, and acid reflux.

To combat indigestion, Dr. Amy Lee, head of nutrition for Nucific, said that up to 1/4 teaspoon can be mixed with water to relieve symptoms.

Drinking baking soda and water has become more commonly associated with athletes. A 2021 review by the International Society of Sports Medicine found that sodium bicarbonate can improve performance in muscular endurance activities, some combat sports, and high intensity running, swimming, rowing, and cycling.

"Some people believe that it can enhance exercise performance by reducing lactic acid buildup, potentially leading to improved endurance," said Manaker.

Sodium bicarbonate is even sold in capsules or in some athletic supplements.

What Are the Risks Of Drinking Baking Soda And Water?

"While drinking baking soda and water can be safe in small amounts, it is crucial to be aware of the associated risks," said Manaker. "People should not drink this combo without consulting with their healthcare provider to ensure it is safe for their needs."

According to the International Society of Sports Medicine, sodium bicarbonate supplementation can cause bloating, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, which, of course, could then negatively impact athletic performance.

If not consumed properly, Manaker said that excessive amounts of baking soda can cause serious health risks like gastrointestinal issues and metabolic alkalosis, which happens when the body's pH becomes too alkaline.

"Additionally, frequent consumption may lead to electrolyte imbalances, especially for individuals with pre-existing conditions such as hypertension or kidney issues, as baking soda contains a high amount of sodium," she said.

How Much Baking Soda Can Be You Consume?

In general, Manaker said health experts recommend taking no more than 1/2 teaspoon at a time and no more than 3 teaspoons per day. As always, it's important to discuss this with your doctor first.
