N.J. Girl, 4, in Stable Condition After Allegedly Being Stabbed Multiple Times by Family Member During Dispute

A stock image of police tape.A 4-year-old girl from New Jersey is on the mend after being stabbed several times during an attack that occurred this week.
Police found the young child with multiple stab wounds at a home along 10th Avenue in Paterson after 4:00 p.m. local time on Friday, Aug. 23, the Passaic County prosecutor's office said, per CBS News, ABC 7 New York and NBC New York.
The victim, whose identity has not been released, was critically injured with stab wounds to her forehead and transported to Saint Joseph's University Medical Center, where she remains in stable condition, reported the outlets.
The incident reportedly occurred during a fight between family members at the residence, the outlets said. It is not clear what started the altercation.

Police have not yet confirmed any suspects, and the investigation is ongoing.

Eyewitnesses said that they saw the girl’s mother carrying her out of the residence covered in blood as she cried hysterically following the incident.
"We just seen the lady, the mommy, holding her daughter, running out the house hysterically, and blood coming from everywhere," one neighbor told CBS News.
"But the paramedics came here on time, did what they had to do, so just pray to God that the little girl is okay and that she makes it and everything's okay because we have the whole city praying for her," they added.
The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office and Paterson County police did not respond to PEOPLE's request for comment on Sunday, Aug. 25.
