Moment Former Carriage Horses Find Comfort in Each Other at Sanctuary Is So Beautiful

There are few cities in the world as iconic as New York City. Whether you're a tourist taking in the sights and sounds or a recent college grad trying to make it in the big city, it's impossible not to feel the buzz when you first step off the plane. Hitting up all of the famous landmarks is a must-do, but there's a dark side to Central Park that not many people consider.

One of the most bucket-list-worthy things to do in Central Park is to ride in a horse-drawn carriage, but many of the horses are overworked, mistreated, and used purely as a tourist trap. Fortunately, many of the horses who have been rescued from this trade are now enjoying life in animal sanctuaries just like The Gentle Barn.

Bernard is one of those lucky horses who was rescued for his retirement. On May 12, he arrived at The Gentle Barn to start life anew, and the next day, he met a friend who had been through the very same thing.

Wow--it's so moving to watch Bernard adjusting to his new home with such ease. He's as relaxed as can be while meeting a new horse friend, and he's even helping himself to a snack! Considering all he's been through as a working horse in the city that never sleeps, it's hard to believe that he can be this trusting already.

However, The Gentle Barn is famous for the fabulous lives their rescue animals lead, and I wouldn't be surprised if Bernard is feeling that love and relaxation already. Moose is another retired carriage horse who can show Bernard the ropes around the barn, and I have a feeling they're going to be great friends. When he's ready, Bernard will have another rescue horse--Moose's brother Aslan--who can be a playmate and confidante, too.

The Reality of NYC Carriage Horses

While horse and carriage rides have been a moneymaker for Central Park since it opened in 1858, some folks have noticed that many horses are in poor shape. Even Bernard arrived at the horse rescue with a long list of injuries. He was experiencing lameness and pain from years of pulling carriages on concrete, and the numbers burned into his hoof caused a number of concerns. Luckily, he's getting all of the care he needs, but many retired, injured, and unwanted horses are not so lucky.

Bernard had been sent to auction by his carriage company when he became lame, where they expected to sell him to someone who would give him a much shorter future. Instead, he was rescued by Copper Horse Crusade, who teamed up with another equine rescue to find him the perfect home.

It may have taken a village to rescue Bernard, but this horse's happy ending is a beacon of hope to so many. I can't wait to see his updates from The Gentle Barn!
