Mika and Brian Kleinschmidt have the tall order of renovating two dated hotels on the North Carolina coast on a strict timeline for the new series 100 Day Hotel Challenge. Luckily, they have plenty of help from their talented HGTV friends.
Farmhouse Fixer stars Jonathan Knight and Kristina Crestin joined Mika on the first episode of the series, providing their design and renovation expertise. They updated two guest rooms in the William & Garland Motel in Salter Path, North Carolina. Property Brothers Drew and Jonathan Scott determined Mika's team to be the winners over Brian, who was paired with Sarah and Bryan Baeumler (Renovation Island).
Jonathan shared a photo from filming on Instagram, and fans left hundreds of comments. Plenty left positive messages, but a few disagreed with the design and left comments like, "I wish they were doing a more beach vibe. Light and bright! And different wallpaper ( old lady) and team help! Sorry. Was excited about the new show!" Another wrote, "Oh my. That’s bad. Not beachy AT ALL!!!"
Jonathan hopped into the comments section himself to respond to the comments: "gave the owners what they asked for. Sorry it wasn’t your vibe!" and "owners didn’t want beachy! Respect your opinion though. 😀"
Unlike many HGTV competition shows, the teams on 100 Day Hotel Challenge have input from the property owners, and, in the case of Mika's motel, they owners live on site. She explained, "They were involved, but there were some wish list items that were part of our judging criteria, so we had to make sure we stayed true to their wish list."
The owners of the motel shared photos of the renovation on Facebook, and they're definitely pleased with the results. They wrote, "This room is so gorgeous and perfectly designed. We wanted an elevated, vintage vibe and the team exceeded any and all expectations! I’m obsessed with the combo of tambour and our original headboard. The wallpaper is tropical and unique. 8 of our 10 other rooms have kitchenettes and this room just didn’t have space for a 4 person dining area. The reupholstered cane chairs are so perfect and we can’t forget the masterfully crafted built-in woodwork!"
On the next episode, Brian and Mika team up with Michel Smith Boyd and Galey Alix to update the lobbies of each hotel. The episode airs on Tuesday, August 20 at 8 p.m. EST/7 p.m. CST on HGTV and Max.
