Everyone knows the real fashion is seen not on the runway, but on the streets of the world’s buzziest cities. That could not have been more true this Fashion Month, when exciting trends including bows, exposed bras, transparent dresses, florals, big pants and skirts, western vibes—and my personal favorite, the resurgence of the babushka scarf—dominated the streets of New York, London, Milan, and Paris.

The babushka scarf style got its name from the Russian word babushka, meaning grandmother, as sweet European grannies would often tie a scarf under their chin in the winter, or while running errands. But, in the decades since its origin, the headgear has turned into something of a status symbol—an accessory of luxury. Famous stylish women including Grace Kelly and Jackie Kennedy Onassis involved the babushka in some of their most iconic looks, and these days, It girls including Kendall Jenner, Chloë Sevigny, and Jennifer Lawrence have embraced the look.

Lawrence made headlines just last month, when she stepped out in Paris in a silky beige and black scarf wrapped around her head and tied below her chin. And this week, now back in New York City, she again repped the style, proving that a well-tied scarf is capable of elevating even the most casual of outfits.

This time around, the actor opted for a cozy gray scarf—tied babushka style—paired with a soft, oversize brown belted coat. Seemingly headed to a workout class, she layered the outerwear over shiny black leggings and added on another old-school European staple: clogs. It was a navy pair, which she wore with black socks. Lawrence accessorized her unexpected look with brown tortoiseshell sunglasses.
