Helen Mirren, 77, Has the Best Reaction to Being Called a ‘Nudist’

Helen Mirren opened up about being called a “nudist.”
She has previously shared her love for nudist beaches.
“It is a fabulously liberating experience,” she said.
Fun fact about Helen Mirren: She’s number one on this list of celebrity nudists—and when it was pointed out to her in a recent interview, she had the best reaction. “That’s great!” she told the Los Angeles Times. “I’m not the sort of person who goes off to a nudist camp, but the very few times I’ve found myself naked on a beach or somewhere with a lot of other naked people, it is a fabulously liberating experience.”
The 77-year-old continued, adding that the communal vulnerability eliminates the pressures of typical beauty standards. “The whole construct of what it means to be a human being in terms of your earrings, your lipstick, your shirt, your age... everything falls away!” she said. “And you become a different kind of human being, a human being that’s not related to anything physical. It’s a very lovely thing.”
To have made the aforementioned list, Mirren, of course, had to have previously opened up about baring it all in public. “It becomes very, very sweet—very human in a rather beautiful way,” she said of visiting nude beaches in a 2019 radio interview. “I’m proudly a naturist.”
Mirren also once reportedly commented on how the experience brings people together: “Ugly people, beautiful people, old people, whatever,” she said, per Radio Times.“It’s so unisexual and so liberating.”
She’s also previously shot nude scenes without much second thought. In 2015, she opened up about filming one in the 1979 film, Caligula. “Everyone was naked in that,” she told People, per Vanity Fair. “It was like showing up for a nudist camp every day. You felt embarrassed if you had your clothes on in that movie.”
At 70, though, Mirren made the decision to enjoy the rest of her life’s no-clothes moments off-camera. “That’s the good thing about getting older,” she said in 2015, per Vanity Fair. “You don’t have to do that sort of thing anymore... [Now] my pleasure pillows are purely for my husband.”
Mirren did, however, recently film bedroom scenes with Harrison Ford, whom she plays opposite in the Yellowstone spinoff 1923—an experience she found exhilarating. “I had to be in the bed with him, you know. I’m dressed up to here,” Mirren said in an April panel with The Wrap, gesturing to her neck. “But I’m lying there and I’m thinking, ‘I’m in bed with Harrison Ford.’ I was so excited, I can’t tell you. I had to pretend to be cool. Don’t tell him. Promise me.”
She continued, raving about the privilege of working with Ford. “He’s come to a place where he can be easy with other actors. It’s immensely generous and incredibly professional. Not remotely a spoiled movie star, at all. I genuinely love him,” she said. “If I wasn’t married…”
