Wearing the right shoes can make all the difference between going about your day in comfort and dealing with foot pain. But things tend to get a little complicated when you hit the beach or pool, where flip-flops and sandals reign supreme. After all, most people aren't going to hang near the water in lace-up, supportive sneakers. So, what do foot doctors wear during their off-time when they head to the beach? We polled five different doctors for their go-to summer fun footwear.

These leather orthotic sandals come in a wide range of colors, including bright shades like Marigold and Lake Blue, along with neutrals like Black Tortoise and Bronze. A deep heel cup, extra forefoot cushioning and arch support at the midsole cradle your feet while you walk. A rubber sole helps prevent slipping on wet ground.

"Footwear on the beach can be fun and fashionable," Melissa Lockwood, a podiatrist at Heartland Foot and Ankle Associates in Illinois, tells Yahoo Life. "I recommend a strong supportive sandal — think, Vionic — for staying on the sand."

Oofos is a big name in supportive off-hours footwear. This sandal features special Oofoam technology that's designed to absorb impact and reduce stress on your feet and joints. A nice perk: The sandals' closed-cell foam minimizes odor and is even machine washable.

Lockwood also gives Oofos the thumbs up, both for their support and ease of cleaning. "Oofos are my favorite right now because they are so easy to clean the sand off of," she says.

Birkenstock's Arizona sandals have a contoured footbed of foam and cork, along with a deep heel cup to give feet stable support. Microscopic air bubbles in the footbed add extra cushioning while adjustable straps help you get that just-right fit.

"Sandals should have a thick sole and not be flimsy," says Claire Capobianco, a foot and ankle surgeon at Orthopaedic Associates of Southern Delaware, tells Yahoo Life. She likes these Birkenstock sandals for the beach and pool. "Good fit is paramount," Capobianco adds. "No toes hanging over the edge of your sandals!"

Crocs manage to be lightweight yet supportive, making them a great option for the beach. Ventilation ports at the top and sides keep your feet comfortable, as well as easily let out sand and water. Flip the back strap down or up in what's affectionately known as "four wheel drive" mode for a more secure fit.

Capobianco also gives classic Crocs her vote, "especially in four wheel drive mode with the the back strap down—it's good for hiking up and down dunes, and pulling beach carts."

Supportive sandals are admittedly pricier than drugstore flip-flops, but Spenco's sandals aren't astronomically expensive. They feature a specialized footbed to help prevent plantar fasciitis pain, along with a shock-absorbing cushioning system that also helps prevent overpronation.

"For people who want something a bit more economical and with excellent support — but not quite as high of an arch as the Vionic — the Spenco sandals are great," Richard H. Graves, a podiatrist at Sol Foot and Ankle Centers in California, tells Yahoo Life.

These Vionic sandals are unisex, so anyone can wear them. They feature an orthotic footbed with a deep heel cup for added support. They're also lightweight and have an EVA midsole to absorb shock. The rubber outsole is great for getting a grip.

Graves calls Vionic sandals his "personal favorite." He continues, "They have a great arch support that feels almost as good as my custom orthotics. The outer sole has just the right amount of stiffness and I can wear them all day without having foot pain."

These sandals are a definite splurge, but they're made to last for years. The Mephisto Sharks feature the brand's patented Soft Air technology, along with an abrasion-resistant sole for comfort. Adjustable straps help you to get that perfect fit.

"I like the Mephisto Shark due to its durability and excellent design," Bruce Pinker, a foot and ankle surgeon with New York’s Progressive Foot Care, tells Yahoo Life. "I have worn a few of this model, and one pair lasted nearly 10 years! They are well-constructed."

Those comfortable Birkenstock sandals also come in a waterproof version. The Arizona Essentials have a soft, cushiony feel and are lightweight, making them easy to wear through wet and sandy conditions. The sandals also have adjustable straps.

Sondema Tarr, a foot and ankle specialist at Direct Podiatry Arizona, tells Yahoo Life that she prefers sandals made of synthetic materials. "If your shoe were to get wet, you wouldn't have to worry about the possibility of mold, or the materials of the shoe being destroyed," she explains. "Right now I wear the Arizona Essential Slide Sandal from Birkenstock."
