Service dogs are such amazing animals that can help humans in a number of ways. Tobias is a Doberman Pinscher who is a medical service dog for his mom. He's with her constantly, helping to keep her alive (more on that later). Tobias' mom shared a video in mid-April of the two of them at work, and in this video, Tobias is the one that needs help!

The video starts with Tobias attentively looking at his mom to get her attention. She says, "Show me", and Tobias takes off, leading her to the problem. He leads her down the rows of a warehouse, finally stopping on one where the problem is located. Watch to see what happens when mom realizes why Tobias needs help.

Tobias had a crisis of his own and he needed help, STAT! People left some funny comments about the service dog needing service from his mom. @mammie_jj got more than 73 thousand likes for their comment, "The way he's staring with every muscle tense like EMERGENCY!!!!" @Blank made me laugh and got more than 46 thousand likes when they said, "You’re such a good service human." @Sapphire Moon's mom shared, "The 'Show Me' command is so handy, I just wish they could talk because she'll take me to the problem and then I'm just staring at the wall like "what is it though" LOL!" Tobias' mom agreed, "Same here! Sometimes I can’t figure it out. And Tobias definitely talks but not in a language I understand!"

The Amazing Work of Service Dogs

Tobias’ mom explains that she has a dysfunction of the nervous system which controls non-voluntary body functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, and several other things. He’s trained to smell the chemical changes in her body in relation to her condition. She shared a video of him alerting to an elevation in heart rate, followed by a sudden drop in heart rate. This causes a drop in her blood pressure and can lead to fainting. It's pretty amazing to see!

Service dogs are trained to help people with disabilities. These disabilities can include visual impairments, people using wheelchairs, PTSD survivors, and people with epilepsy or other medical conditions. The dogs learn how to communicate with their owners to let them know when they need to pay attention to something, for example this little girl's dog alerted her that her blood sugar was low. They're actually pretty incredible friends and lifesavers all in one. My cousin has cerebral palsy, and his service dog has given him more independence than he's ever had before!

One way that a service dog communicates when something is wrong is through nudging. According to The Service Dogs, there's something called 'sensory overload' basically it's when too much is going on and someone is experiencing all five senses at the same time, leaving them unable to process it all. This is something that many autistic people experience. In this case, a service dog might nudge to their owner to get them to focus on one thing instead of trying to process everything.

If a service dog ever nudges you, it's a sign that its owner needs help. If you come across a service dog who nudges or barks at you and they are separated from their owner, follow them immediately! You could save someone's life.
