While country superstar Keith Urban may have sold millions of records and have 20 No. 1 singles to his credit, he says he not only doesn't have a tour rider but he doesn't even ask promoters for much backstage.

Urban's new album, High, drops Sept. 20, 2024.

He recently told Taste of Country Nights host Evan Paul he can only think of two essential things to put on a good show—a glass of water and his bandmates.

"I don't have any of that, like, you know what I mean ... The rider and the whole thing. I'm pretty low-key; I don't need much," Urban said. “If I can get water in a glass—like glass bottle instead of plastic—it just tastes better and probably a bit healthier, that’s about it.”

When pressed for what he needs backstage at every show, he joked, "My band ... It's good if they're there, so I can walk out and play with some music."

And that's exactly what they did in a recent headline-grabbing, free Friday night pop-up show at a Buc-ee's in Athens, Ala., on Aug. 16. Urban first visited this location of the Texas-based travel center chain known for its massive scale and barbecued brisket counter in June after picking up his daughter from Space Camp at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville.

Urban said in an Instagram post made by Huntsville news station WAFF-48: "I came down to this Buc-ee's about a month ago and when I left, I went, 'It'd be kind of fun to do a show there ...' So, this is my caveman brain. I am like, 'It'll be fun. We'll set up a little stage, and some people will come around and hear us play.' I swear to you I thought maybe 100, 200 people. This is why we've got this little stage, the little lights, and the little PA system. This is freaking me out, so thank you so much for coming out!"

Urban is currently touring other places besides surprise Buc-ee's gigs, performing shows in select U.S. cities through 2024 and into next year. His current tour dates include HIGH in Las Vegas, a 10-date limited engagement split into two stints at Fontainebleau Las Vegas on Oct. 4-12, 2024, and Feb. 14-22, 2025.
