Disabled Hamster Who Gets Around Without the Use of Her Back Legs Is Touching Hearts
If there's anything that I've learned since writing about pets and animals here on Pet Helpful, it's that animals with disabilities never let their condition hold them back from living normal lives. And pet owners go out of their way to make their fur babies' lives as normal - and comfortable - as possible, and they can get pretty creative with how they do it!
Abigail is an adorable pet hamster who has no use of her back legs. Her 'mommy' posted a video in July of her zipping around the living room, and it's absolutely adorable! The video starts with an overlay that reads, "You think I'm slow because I'm disabled? Watch me!" I think you'll be surprised at how fast she really is!

It seems that Abigail gets around just as quickly as any other hamster! Her disability is definitely not a disability when it comes to her speed. Abigail's mommy said in other videos that they aren't sure why her back legs don't work, as she's healthy and in no pain or discomfort. One commenter said, "She needs a little tech deck scooter LMAO! She’d be flying at Mach 5!" Believe it or not, Abigail's mom even made her fur baby a DIY wheelchair, and she gets around even quicker when she uses that!
Commenters all agreed that Abigail is adorable. @itsbrandonreid is spot on with his comment, "Cutest little Swiffer I’ve ever seen!" @Sierragwilliams had the same idea, "Cute lil' Roomba!" and another person added, "ZHU ZHU PET!!!"

Do Hamsters Make Good Pets?
One of the first pets that we got for our kids when they were little was a hamster. Sure, we had dogs, but we wanted to get them a pet that they could be responsible for caring for. It didn't work out as planned, as they were scared to hold it, and honestly, I don't think the hamster wanted to be held either because he would nip at them. We ended up gifting the little guy to a friend who already had experience with hamsters.
That's probably the first thing to know about hamsters - they bite. And they tend to bite more than other pet rodents. Older kids and adults might not be bothered by it, but little ones could be terrified after getting a bite from one. According to Spruce Pets, hamsters will bite when scared, rather than being aggressive. They become fearful easily so it's a natural instinct. Even just sticking a finger into their cage to try to pet them can land you with a bite.
While I'm not saying not to get a hamster, I am saying to do your research to learn more about one before bringing one home for the kids. Every pet comes with pros and cons and you have to decide which 'cons' you're willing to deal with.
