College student on TikTok shares how he added an ‘emergency party button’ to his dorm room: ‘You’re a legend’

TikTokers are heaping praise on a college student who remodeled his dorm room with an old fire alarm.

The 18-year-old named Micah (@oneofakidd on TikTok) shared a video tour of his dorm in late February. The clip immediately drew tens of thousands of views.

“I hacked an old fire alarm, so now it does this,” the caption in Micah’s video reads.

It’s just the latest dorm redesign video to spread widely on TikTok. Late last year, a college student built an enormous space-saving loft in his dorm, which many compared to the bedroom from the TV show Drake & Josh.

In Micah’s case, the viral moment immediately sparked questions about how he managed to pull off such a feat of party-centric engineering. Thankfully, the TikToker followed up with an explanation.

Micah starts by explaining that he bought his lights on Amazon, then connected them to an RM Mini — a kind of compact universal remote.

Then, he bought an old fire alarm on Amazon and connected it to an Arduino Nano, which is a small, programmable circuit board. Finally, Micah wrote a computer program that responds to the alarm by turning up his music, queueing a robotic voice, switching on his projector and activating the lights via an Amazon Alexa command.

The final touch? A customized digital sign that reads, “Let the party begin.”

Commenters had plenty of compliments for Micah’s room.

“You’re a legend,” one user wrote.

“5.0 GPA activities,” another added.

Others joked that Micah must be an engineering major. However, as he said in his video’s comments, he’s actually studying video production.
