So, What *Is* The Cleanse From ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 4?

There's one thing that everyone in The Umbrella Academy season 4 talks about and that is The Cleanse. The mysterious event seems to be huge, but it's also something that we haven't seen yet from the series. For some, it's the thing they've been waiting all their lives for. For others, it's the thing that they're trying to prevent. But what exactly is it? Well, with so much at stake, it's important to know just exactly what it is.
Here's everything you need to know about The Cleanse from The Umbrella Academy season 4.
Okay, first thing's first: what really is The Cleanse?
So you know how marigold is the reason why The Umbrella Academy have their powers? Well, there's something else that is also just as important but even more deadly that reacts to it: durango. In the fourth episode of season 4, Abigail explains it after they find out the truth of Ben's death and why Jennifer is important:
Years ago, I synthesized a new element. The very essence of the universe. The particle we know as marigold. And at the same moment, unbeknownst to me, a second particle was created: durango. When marigold and durango interact, they cause...a reaction, a physical reaction. Unstoppable, irrevocable. The extinction of everything we know.
By the time I realized what was happening, it was too late for our world.
Since the durango is in Jennifer and Ben obviously has marigold in his system, once they touch, they are both affected unless they can separate from each other long enough before it's too late. Because of the reaction, they both feel attracted to each other at first, but we later learn that this is deadly to them both.
So what happens when durango and marigold come together?
As we later see in the episode, they start to bond together to create a sort of physical creature that initially takes over its host. At first it starts to look as if lava was flowing through someone's veins, but eventually turns into a creature that has a lot of roots and boils all over it.
This creature is later know to be as The Cleanse because once it becomes so powerful, it ends the world and turns it into an apocalypse.
Why do The Keepers believe The Cleanse is a good thing?
To them, The Cleanse, "a great restoration," that will help them return to their rightful selves and timeline. Due to all the time issues, things from other timelines have started to leak into this one, causing people to believe/know that something has taken them away from their respective timelines. They think that The Cleanse will bring them back and that it's somehow connected to Hargreeves.
How can they stop The Cleanse?
Attacking The Cleanse just makes it grow stronger and eventually Ben and Jennifer get too close to be successful. Eventually Five realizes that The Cleanse is also the only true way to return everything back to their initial timelines because it's a way to destroy all the marigold and durango from the world. However, in order for that to happen, they need to also die and cease to exist.
When The Umbrella Academy sacrifice themselves, the timeline is restores itself back to what it was supposed to be all along.
