Bride Explodes at Woman Who Repurposed Her Own Wedding Dress as Guest Attire — but the Gown Wasn't Even White
The partygoer asked on Reddit if she was in the wrong for rewearing her unconventional dark blue wedding dress
Wearing a wedding dress to another bride's reception is generally considered the ultimate guest etiquette sin — but what if the dress isn't even white?
Earlier this year, a 20-year-old woman posted on a popular Reddit forum to find out if she was in the wrong for repurposing her atypical wedding attire on someone else's big day. The author of the post shared she wore a long, dark blue sequin dress with a single sleeve when she tied the knot two years earlier. She actually wore the dress to her prom first before adapting it into her wedding dress to save some money.
The anonymous Reddit user figured the ensemble would make a great outfit for her friend's wedding, which had a dark blue color scheme and "fancy" dress code. "It’s not white and it’s not even remotely close to a wedding dress. I also didn’t feel like wasting money on another fancy dress that I wouldn’t ever wear again, especially since we aren’t rich," she explained in her post.
However when her friend — whom she calls Ciara — recognized the gown as a former wedding dress, she completely "lost it."
"She yelled at me in front of all the guests, in front of her husband and my husband, saying that what I did was horrible and that no one shows up at a wedding in a wedding dress," the author recalled. "I tried to reason with her, saying that the dress isn’t a wedding dress, it’s the only fancy piece of clothing I own, I wore it to multiple occasions before and after my wedding."
The Reddit poster goes on to describe how the groom and the bridal party had to help calm down the bride. Eventually, the sequin-clad guest and her husband decided to leave the event instead of deal with anymore drama.
Then she received texts from Ciara, who blamed the woman for "upstaging her on her wedding day" and for "driving a wedge between her and her husband," since the groom believe his newlywed wife "overreacted massively."
The post writer said she mainly felt like the bride was being unreasonable, but she had some doubts about who was in the wrong. In the comments, other Reddit users staunchly sided with the guest. Many pointed to the fact that she's reworn the sequin dress to numerous occasions since the wedding as well.
"If she is a close enough friend to know a blue sequined gown was your wedding dress and had seen you wear it to other social events then she had a pretty good idea you would wear it to her wedding," one commenter replied, adding, "She could have asked you ahead of time to wear something else but instead she chose to make a massive scene. A friend doesn’t do that."
Another user agreed, "The only rule at a wedding is that you don’t wear white. Sorry you were treated like this, I think you did the best you could by walking out."
