Beagle Puppy's Confident Howls Are the Hype Everyone Deserves

For some reason, the littlest puppies always seem to have the most to say. They have no issue bossing other dogs, and even people, around, and they have the times of their lives exploring what they can do with their newly discovered barks. Whether it's more of a yip or a full-on howl, puppies using their voices is truly something special to witness.

Of course, everyone thinks that their puppy's howling is the cutest sound they've ever heard (and they're all correct), but one special little Beagle has a totally different kind of sound. Sushi is no stranger to using her voice to alert her mom and to communicate, but viewers watching the February 24 video for the first time are taken aback by her bark. This little girl's howls are so sweet, they may just melt your heart!

OMG--listen to her! Sushi is even tinier than I was expecting for a beagle puppy, but clearly, that doesn't stop her from living her best life. Some commenters on other videos are wondering whether she's a mixed-breed dog (maybe she has some Chihuahua genes?) or whether she's just a very tiny Beagle dog. Either way--she's absolutely perfect exactly as she is!

Tiny Miss Sushi has such a big bark, but I don't think her owner is surprised anymore. She takes advantage of any and every opportunity to get her temper tantrums on film, especially since her puppy barks and howls sound so...unique! My very first thought was that she sounded like a rubber chicken, but other viewers came up with different references. Whatever her howls make you think of, there's no doubt just how sweet they are.

Beagles and Baying

Even though Sushi's howls are--without a doubt--howls, beagles are known for making a very unique sound. It's called baying, and only scent hounds will make it. Back when dog breeds like Beagles and hounds were used mainly for hunting, a dog would bay to indicate to pack members who was following the scent trail of the animal. Even today, many non-hunting hounds bay when communicating about a scent or just expressing their excitement.

How can you tell the difference between baying and barking?

"While howls involve holding a single sound for a prolonged time," explains Stanley Coren, PhD., DSc, FRSC, "baying contains many tone variations and occurs in short bursts. To me, baying sounds like the combination of a howl and a yodel."

If you ask me, Sushi may be teaching herself how to bay! Whatever the adorable sound is, it's special to see this young puppy gaining more and more confidence every day. This gal may be pocket-sized, but she can still command a room!
