Barry Keoghan (!) Just Joined the ‘Peaky Blinders’ Movie
This is not a drill: Barry Keoghan just landed a role in the Peaky Blinders movie. His character is under wraps, but knowing that he’ll star alongside Cillian Murphy and Rebecca Ferguson is enough good news to tide me over until the film premieres.
The sixth and final season of Peaky Blinders dropped on Netflix back in 2022, but thankfully, the story isn't over for Tommy Shelby (Murphy) and his Birmingham crew. Creator Steven Knight made the rare decision to conclude the show's run on television with a movie—and then proceeded to fade into the shadows without a peep of new information. In January, he finally updated his fans about the long-awaited finale.
"I’m just working on the final bits of it at the moment," Knight told Radio Times. "I just sit down at the keyboard and start. It’s a bit like having a dream for me. You sit there, and all this stuff comes, and then you read it back and think, ‘That’s pretty good – but where did it come from?’ The plan is to start shooting that in the middle of next year." The interview took place back in December, so when Knight said "middle of next year," we’re assuming he meant the summer of 2024.
Netflix hasn’t announced when the Peaky Blinders movie will actually start filming, but judging by Keoghan’s addition to the cast, it seems like production is well underway. Here's everything we know about the Peaky Blinders movie.
What's Next for Peaky Blinders?
Season 7 was supposed to complete Tommy Shelby’s arc, including the passing of his daughter and his difficult transition of creating a new moral worldview. Now, it sounds like those conflicts will take place on the big screen—maybe even with some big-budget action. "The biggest difference between a film and TV series is the budget," Knight said in the Radio Times interview. "When you do stuff for TV, you often have to ask people to imagine it. But with a film, you can really do it. You can blow stuff up. Will Tommy be giving James Bond a run for his money? Maybe. There are parallels. We always thought of Peaky as very cinematic, so we are finally finding a screen big enough for what we want to do."
Who Will Appear in the Film?
We don't know much about who will be included in the film's cast aside from Keoghan, Murphy, and Ferguson. However, Knight seemingly confirmed that Paul Anderson will reappear as Tommy’s brother, Arthur. When asked whether the actor would be returning to the Peaky Blinders universe, Knight told Digital Spy, "It's impossible to say yet. But the film—yes."
Could There Be More Peaky Blinders After the Movie?
Absolutely. Knight confirmed that he has two spinoffs in development at Netflix, including one "set in Boston during the middle of the 20th century, a couple decades after the original Peaky Blinders." As for the other one? "[It] would focus on Polly, the matriarch of the criminal Shelby clan." Sounds like it may be a longer wait before the Shelby gang is back on your screen, but there certainly won't be any shortage of Peaky Blinders action in the coming years.
