Australian Shepherd Mimicking Ambulance in the City Is Totally Spot-On

Raising a dog in the city is a certain kind of experience. They'll grow up completely unfazed by crowds, near tons and tons of trash, and the sounds of traffic passing them will be NBD. Unless you're one Australian Shepherd, who has a hilarious reaction every time an ambulance passes by.

The dog's owner caught them in action while the two were biking through New York City recently.

Thankfully, it seems that Matty has a high tolerance for shame because he wasn't embarrassed at all when Kaido threw his head back and started howling away as an emergency vehicle made its way passed.

"A-woooooo," the Australian Shepherd howled. "A-woooooo."

Matty was cracking up over his little "awoobulance" and even turned the camera around, where he caught people on the street having a chuckle at his pup.

"He loves doing that," he told a man waiting at the corner. Many people on the sidewalk stopped and were having a laugh at Kaido's howls.

"Kaido the Awoobulance helps clear a path," the man joked in the caption.

People online were thanking Kaido for staying on top of things. "Dog said 'I'll notify everyone on this end,'" joked one person. "He’s just helping notify the people that an 'awoo' is coming through!" wrote one commenter. "The mix of embarrassment and amusement on your face," someone else teased. "The way he throws his little head back, he is on the CLOCK," kidded another person.

Why Australian Shepherds Howl

Not every dog is as verbal as Australian Shepherds are. In fact some dogs don't really bark or make any noise at all. But Aussies are special. There are certain reasons why an Aussie might let loose a howl.

For instance, Aussies were once bred for hunting and some of those instincts have yet to fade. Aussies used howling as a means to control the flock. A non-working Aussie might still get the urge every now and then.

Of course there are less serious reasons why an Aussie might howl, like wanting attention. They'll even howl when they want something like food, water, or even play time, if their owner isn't giving it to them.

The last reason could possibly explain Kaido's impromptu howl-session: hearing a loud noise. It's not exactly clear why this is. It could once again be because of their hunting origins. These dogs were bred to be receptive to sounds and noises from herded animals and shepherds. It also may be an Aussie's way of making a call to action.

As for Kaido, it's just another day living in the city.
