When the PureWow Slack channel lights up with staffers posting about new discoveries and classic beloved styles, it’s an add to cart moment. So when a cross-section of editors chimed in about a particular pair of pants I wasn’t familiar with, the Anthropolgie Colette. I wondered if I had missed a gem right under my nose. Our pants-loving editor-in-chief wore it to PureWow’s New York City office with heels. Our commerce editor wore it on Santa Monica beach strolls with her pup. Both women, like me, are shorties. What was this magical traveling pant in our sisterhood?

I asked Anthropologie honcho Samantha Murphy (her title is “Senior Buyer, Bottoms” which sounds kind of sexy, right?) for the scoop. She said the store began selling the Colette in 2020, officially naming them in 2021. “The Colette pant is our rave-reviewed silhouette with a high-rise waist that hugs your curves and gradually flows into a crop-wide cut,” she says. “It combines a tailored fit with a touch of retro-inspired flare.” She said the pants are refreshed every season, in new colorways, fabrics and silhouettes, and are offered in Standard, Petite, Tall and Plus sizing. Not only that, but new seasonal styles are designed by taking into account customer feedback. I wonder if that’s part of the staying power of this versatile style, which has since branched out into skirts, shorts and jumpsuits. The through line in all the pieces are what Murphy emphasizes are a “distinctive high-rise and crop-wide flare that our customers have grown to love.”

But come on—really? Anthropologie turned an anthleisure-loving nation into women who clamor to actually wear a zippered and button waistband? Even us petites, who know on a cellular level that most store-bought trousers that aren’t sweatpants will require annoying trips to the tailor or de regeur pairing with heels. I needed convincing. So I purchased a pair. Here’s my review, along with two of my colleagues’.

17 Pairs of Petite Pants Every Woman 5’ 4” and Under Needs

The Colette Cropped Wide-Leg Pants by Maeve: Linen Edition

Dana Dickey

At a shade over 5’3”, I’m right on the cusp of true petite status, however I’m long-waisted so my legs truly are petite. (I’m shaped like Gumby, is what I’m saying.) Since I hate the camel toe restriction that petite cuts sometimes give me due to their short inseams, I opted to give the regular, not petite Colette size a try. After all, the standard Colette has a 26-inch inseam, which will hit my short legs at the ankle. I’m pleased to say the outcome of this sartorial trigonometry is that these are great white trousers that I don’t have to hem, a first in a lifetime of resortwear pants shopping. The stretch fabric hugs my bum in a flattering not cheap-looking way, and everything about them feels ultra-soft. The fabric is so light, I’ll be able to wear these on the hottest days when jeans aren’t an option but shorts don’t seem right, either.

The Colettes are my secret weapon, because they appear high-waisted (but actually come up to just below my belly button) and, thanks to a 24” inseam in the petite sizing, hit right above my ankle,” says PureWow editor-in-chief Jillian Quint, who is 5’1” and wears her Colettes to the office with walkable heels.  She also appreciates that, because they are so lose in the legs, there’s no discernable “knee” which often hits at the wrong spot on her pint-size legs. “I look like a person in pants that fit, not a kid trying on her mother’s clothes.”

"I really love how lightweight and stretchy the Colette pants are and the style is so versatile. I picked up this Holly-colored pair in the regular length, and it hits perfectly at my ankles,” says PureWow assistant commerce editor Natalie LaBarbera, who is 5'2". “The pants were also quick to dry in the sun, after an impromptu oceanside walk with my pup, and kept feeling comfy through the entire day. The only issue I've had is that the waistband bunches up just a bit, but it's definitely nothing to keep me from wearing them weekly."
