Andre Braugher's Cause of Death Revealed Three Days After His Death

André Braugher, the acclaimed actor known for his roles in shows like Homicide: Life on the Street and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, died at age 61 on Monday, Dec. 11. We now know his cause of death.

Initially, his publicist, Jennifer Allen, said the actor had died after a "brief illness" but did not elaborate. Today, she confirmed to The New York Times that the actor died from lung cancer just a few months after he was diagnosed.

The former smoker had told New York Times Magazine in 2014 that he quit “years ago.”

In addition to starring in Homicide: Life on the Street, for which he received an Emmy, Braugher was known as a prolific actor who was nominated for 11 Emmys during his career. He won two: for Homicide and his portrayal of Nick Atwater in the 2006 limited series, Thief.

His breakout film role was in Glory, the Oscar-winning 1989 movie about Black soldiers during the Civil War. He went on to star in many popular TV series beyond Homicide and Nine-Nine.

You may remember Braugher from his starring role on Gideon's Crossing, stints on the original Law & Order and SVU, The Good Fight, Last Resort and House. He recently voiced Woodchuck Coodchuck-Berkowitz, the governor of California in the Netflix animated series BoJack Horseman.
