'A plant I can’t kill': Never buy herbs again with this countertop herb garden that's just $48

Fragrant pesto on homemade pizza, spicy chimichurri slathered on grilled steak, and homemade tabbouleh paired with falafel — all of these delicious meals have one very simple thing in common: They require loads of fresh herbs for their signature flavor.

Or course, you can always trek out to your grocery store when you have the urge to make baked salmon with dill or want to frizzle up some sage leaves for brown butter pasta, but then you might be left with an entire bag of herbs that will probably wilt before you get around to using all of it.

If that sounds all too familiar, you might find that the Aerogarden Sprout is a great way for you to have freshly grown herbs available right on your countertop whenever the cooking mood strikes. And right now you can get the Aerogarden Sprout — a great introductory model to hydroponic herb gardening — for 30% off at just $48.

Grow three of your favorite herbs without the use of soil or sunshine with this hydroponic countertop garden.

It's super simple to set up, too. It comes with three herb pods and "grow domes" to place over the pods before they sprout. It also comes with liquid plant food and a quick planting guide. The Sprout holds up to three herb plants at a time and is designed to grow plants up to five times faster than in regular soil.

The low-fuss design is easy to use. The roots grow into the water while the sprouts climb toward the LED grow light, which automatically kicks on and off for several hours of growing time a day. It has a low water indicator so you know when to top up the water, and there's also a nutrient reminder indicator when it's time to add plant food. Plus, it's a small and slim design that's perfect for small kitchen with limited counter space.

I owned and used a larger model of the Aerogarden for years — I only got rid of it when I moved abroad and couldn't bring it with me — and I miss it to this day. I loved having fresh herbs handy for mealtime, and the abundance of fresh flavors at my fingertips encouraged me to get creative in the kitchen.

Dill, parsley, thyme and basil were just a few of the herbs I quickly grew in my Aerogarden. I frequently wound up with handfuls of fresh basil — one of the fastest-growing herbs in these herb gardens — and used the fragrant leaves to make delicious homemade pesto in order to preserve every ounce of the fresh flavor for future recipes.

Other Aerogarden users have found clever ways to use their gardens, too.

"I use it in a therapy office with kids and there are so many parallels with the therapeutic process," said one reviewer on Amazon. "The kids love to see the growth from week to week!"

"Fresh herbs can get expensive, and having them always available — and at their peek flavor — is not just wonderful but eventually pays for the cost of the Aerogardens," said another reviewer who owns several different models of Aerogardens.

"Has been set up for a month and a half and we have almost enough basil to make our first batch of pesto," said another Amazon reviewer. "Impressive from such a small plant."
