In the grand scheme of home decor, the bathroom can be easy to overlook. But just like your bedroom needs cozy sheets, and a comfy chair is a must in your living room, the right accessories can elevate your bathroom’s utility and style. A bathroom rug is a simple yet high-impact way to instantly transform the space, adding color, comfort and enhancing your safety (provided its non-slip).

When it comes to picking a quality bathroom rug, you’ll want to look at its absorbency, durability and ease of care. Slip resistance and great style are factors to consider, too. Whether you’re looking for a long-overdue decor refresh, are hoping to find something a little more on trend or are wanting to switch to a sustainable option, we've put together a list of bathroom rugs that elevate the room’s aesthetic while providing a comfortable place for you to dry off.

The Best Bathroom Rugs at a Glance

How We Chose the Best Bathroom Rugs

As we vetted the best bathroom rugs out of the many options out there, we first looked at materials to ensure functionality, comfort and durability. (On that front, we paid close attention to the mat’s grams per square meter, or GSM, which indicates how densely woven the fabric is (the higher the number, the heavier it is, which is ideal for something as high-traffic as a bath mat). We also took into account the size and color options, ease of care instructions, the price and, of course, whether it’s going to look nice in your space. While some people (ahem, hi) prefer a non-slip back on a bathroom rug, it isn’t a priority for everyone—especially if you’re trying to avoid synthetic materials or want something you can mindlessly throw in the dryer—so while non-slip wasn’t a must, we did find some options with that in mind.

1. Brooklinen Bath Mat

Brooklinen

Brooklinen’s basic bathroom rug is a winner in so many ways. The substantial 1,000 GSM weight makes it feel so soft and warm underfoot, but it is woven densely and lays flat, so you won’t have any problems with this getting bunched up under a moving door. The 100-percent Turkish cotton will dry your feet — and itself — quickly, and the subtle piping detail throughout adds a touch of timeless ease. This rug doesn’t have a non-slip backing, but its substantial weight means it's less likely to shift on you — just be mindful when stepping onto it.

2. Parachute Classic Turkish Cotton Tub Mat

Parachute

There’s something grounding about Parachute’s 100-percent Turkish cotton bathroom rugs. The plush, 750-GSM weight soothes those feet while keeping your toes dry, and it won’t get soggy in the process. The design is about as straightforward as it gets, with just a simple piping along the edge, and you’ll feel soothed by the serenity of the muted colorways, like Mineral, Stone, Spa and Moss. It won’t require a lot of upkeep, as it dries quickly after use, and caring for this mat is a breeze thanks to its machine-washability.

3. Ebern Designs Zavin Bath Rug

Wayfair

The fact that this Ebern Designs bathroom rug takes a little longer to dry than one made of, say, Turkish cotton, is worth the fact that it’s sure to be one of the softest spots in the house. Almost one full inch of ultra-soft microfiber is like a pillow to your feet, keeping them warm and drying them off quickly after stepping out of the shower. Unlike some high-pile bathroom rugs, this one has a close weave that supports each step, and its non-slip backing helps ensure it’ll stay in place. You might have to hang this over the edge of the tub or shower to help it dry when you get out, but it’s a small act of maintenance for the comfort you get.

4. mDesign Microfiber Rug

Walmart

Unlike the nubby or lumpy texture of some microfiber bathroom rugs, mDesign’s plush-cut yarn creates a softer feel underfoot. Its fuzzy finish almost has an old-school bathroom rug look to it—think back to the vibrant rugs you remember from your grandma’s house—only it doesn’t have that scratchy feel that came with them. The polyester fibers will soak up the drops from your feet easily, while its non-slip back means it’s not going anywhere. As an added bonus, this one comes in a two-pack.

5. Avocado Wooden Bath Mat

Avocado

Wood might not be your first thought when thinking of a cozy bathroom rug. Hard bathmats have their benefits, though, boasting durability, fast-drying capabilities and, as a result, fewer concerns about mildew and other germs. Avocado’s gorgeous mat is made of American Beech wood, a sustainable hardwood that doesn’t require much more upkeep than a spot clean as needed. Its wooden slots are spaced just far enough apart to properly support those tootsies, and the warm wooden tones are an instant mood booster. If you have the space (and the funds), upgrade to the oversized runner version—you’ll feel like you’re at the spa every time you set foot in the bathroom.

8. Wall Qmer Diatomaceous Earth Mat

Amazon

A slab of stone might not seem like the most appealing thing to step onto right out of a warm shower, and indeed, the Wall Qmer Diatomaceous Earth Mat is going to feel colder underfoot than a high-pile or Turkish cotton bathroom rug. But they’ve taken off in popularity for a reason, and it’s not just because they stay in one place and they’re cheap: Diatomaceous earth is made from the sediment of fossilized algae, and the super-porous substance means this mat will instantly soak up moisture from your wet feet and dry itself almost as quickly. This mat is also naturally antibacterial and antimicrobial, and it is a great choice for eco-conscious consumers. The soft gray slate look may not pop, but it’s a subtle, tasteful option for a sleeker bathroom design.

9. Gorilla Grip Premium Luxury Bath Rug

Amazon

The Gorilla Grip rug is accurately named—the heavy-duty rubber backing helps ensure it won’t move when you do. The super plush microfiber yarns feel amazing on your feet, but the fabric will hold water, so you’ll want to make sure it dries between uses. There are five generous sizes available, a hue for any bathroom color scheme, from subtle neutrals to vivid pops of color. The Gorilla Grip can be machine washed, and while the manufacturer doesn’t provide drying instructions, we’d keep this rubber-backed mat out of the dryer so the backing doesn’t deteriorate—hang it to dry instead.
