7 Massive Bike Garages You Have to Check Out

This week, Amsterdam will open a new massive underwater bike storage facility to boost mixed commutes, seamlessly blending biking with train travel by allowing for thousands of bikes to be parked underneath the city’s central train station.

But that’s actually not the biggest bike storage facility in The Netherlands. Here, we’re looking at a few bike garages around the world that are particularly noteworthy in terms of size and design:

The Hague, The Netherlands

This ultra-modern facility was The Netherland’s second largest bike storage building when it opened in 2020, and can hold over 8,000 bikes.

Karlsruhe, Germany

This former parking garage was transformed in 2019 into an airy, colorful, modern bike parking station for 670 bikes. Architectural firm TAFKAL not only provided bike parking, they created locker rooms for changing, water fountains, and ebike battery charging stations.

Uppsala Central Station, Sweden

This bicycle garage by the Central Station in Uppsala, Sweden, was created in 2019 and can hold 1200 bikes. Tengbom’s architects worked to create a secure storage facility that looks ultra modern. "Northern lights, green ceilings and harmonious wood are probably not something you usually associate with a bicycle garage," the architects say. "Together with Uppsala Parkings AB, we changed it." The bike garage was so well received that it often gets some credit for Uppsala being voted Global Climate City of the Year.

Amsterdam Central Station, The Netherlands

The newest large-scale bike storage facility in The Netherlands required going underground and underwater to make space for Amsterdam’s cycling commuters.

Utrecht, The Netherlands

They’re small-scale compared to these massive bike garages, but the UK has a few options for more local bike storage that cyclists can apply for. These small pods or ‘hangars’ allow a few bikes to be stored safely outside, and communities and small businesses can request or rent them. Currently, there are thousands stationed across the UK.
