Which 5 San Joaquin County football players shined in Week 5?

Week 5 of 209 high school football was the week for the passing game. All five players making The Record’s Top 5 Offensive Players of the Week list this week found the endzone in the air.

Run-heavy teams like Lincoln and Manteca found themselves using a wide range of pass plays to get the job done against their final non-league opponent. With league play right around the corner for Tri-City Athletic and Valley Oak League teams Week 5 was the final chance to snag a win over unfamiliar foes.

Here are The Record’s picks for the top five offensive players following Week 5’s action.

1. Martin Tokmo

School: Lincoln

Position: Quarterback

Year: Senior

Summary: If the Trojans wanted to avoid being upset by East Union, Tokmo would have to make it happen. The 6-foot senior quarterback threw for a season-high 205 yards and four touchdowns as Lincoln would make a huge comeback to win 27-26. He opened up the match by connecting with junior wide receiver Terrance Hampton Jr. 65 yards out and would continue to make it happen, throwing three more touchdowns all in the fourth quarter. Tokmo was also pretty effective on the ground rushing for around 50 yards.

Lincoln’s Head Coach Terrance Hampton: “We couldn’t get our run game going with our guys missing some blocks but we did get our pass game going. That’s something that I wanted to improve on from last game having a freshman start but we are glad Tokmo came back and helped us win this thing.”

2. Nikko Juarez

School: Manteca

Position: ATH

Year: Freshman

Summary: Juarez was near unstoppable against Lodi having his way on the ground, in the air and on special teams. He carried the ball 11 times for 131 yards and a touchdown and threw the ball for a 46-yard touchdown pass finding junior Quinn Martinez on a halfback option. The junior found the endzone for the third time that night on a kickoff return taking the ball 65 yards out as a cherry on top of the Buffaloes' dominating 48-6 victory over the Flames. He helped his team advance to 3-2 on the season.

Manteca’s Head Coach Mark Varnum: “Nico Juarez did a great job of stepping up for us while we are still waiting for Bryson Davis to come back. He was the guy for our offensive tonight and I think he did a pretty good job last night he carried the ball for over 100 yards.”

3. Matthew Schallberger

School: Linden

Position: Quarterback

Year: Junior

Summary: Everything was clicking for Linden in its 36-6 win over Bear Creek. Schallberger played a key role in the victory leading the Lions' offense with three passing touchdowns. The junior slinger finished the game throwing 12-for-20 for a total of 204 passing yards, his second-best performance of the season so far. His stellar passing helped Linden improve to 3-0 in San Joaquin Athletic Association play and 5-1 overall. If he can keep this up the Lions will be frontrunners alongside Edison for a SJAA championship.

Linden's Head Coach Alek Mechikoff: "I think he's grown exponentially not just as a quarterback but also as a leader. I thought Matthew led his team well and kept his composure against Bear Creek last night. A big thing last night was that Matt just crossed 1,000 passing yards on the season. So we're really excited about how much he's accomplished so far this year."

4. Josiah Wilson

School: Kimball

Position: Quarterback

Year: Sophomore

Summary: After opening up the season with a 1-3 record, Kimball had a bounce-back performance against Dublin. Wilson had his best game of his young career throwing for a season-high 214 yards on over 60% completion rate. He connected with senior Noah Reffell for his lone touchdown pass. Wilson’s sharp passing helped the Jaguars win their second game of the season beating Dublin 21-7. The Jaguars needed this win with VOL play starting next week and their first opponent being No. 9 ranked Manteca.

Kimball’s Head Coach Derek Graves: “He did good, he was efficient and he’s making strides to become a complete quarterback. Last game we were playing good as an offense but Josiah had got injured and he wasn’t able to finish the game. Nonetheless, it’s always good to have a game like this where we can come and compete with our offense finishing with over 400 yards.”

5. David Goularte

School: Tracy

Position: Wide receiver

Year: Sophomore

Summary: Tracy went blow for blow in a battle of the unbeaten going up against Rocklin. The Bulldogs couldn’t get the job done against the Thunder losing 28-21, but their offense still showed out. Goularte led his team’s wide receiver core catching for 61 yards on two receptions and one touchdown. His 43-yard touchdown catch from senior quarterback Aidan Van Os was the longest play for the Bulldogs that night.

So far this season Goularte has been a consistent offensive contributor for Tracy. He is averaging the third most rushing and receiving yards per game. The sophomore has also scored the second-most touchdowns behind Van Os with six. Goularte’s bread and butter is defense as he has an eye for the ball at the safety position. He is ranked 17th in California in interceptions with four picks.
