You might not even realize that it's time to switch out your bedding until you go on vacation, slip into a plush hotel bed, and discover the world of difference a great duvet cover can make. The best ones strike the perfect balance of being soft and cozy yet still breathable—giving you no choice but to hit the snooze button every morning. And while a luxury duvet cover might not be as critical of a purchase as a supportive mattress, it's one of the easiest upgrades to help make your bed as cloud-like as possible.
"Think of the duvet cover as the foundation of your bed," explains Missy Tannen, the co-founder and chief designer of Boll & Branch. "It's the perfect piece to build your other elements around, like blankets, pillows, and quilts. It also has transformative power, since you can easily change it out to capture a current trend or seasonal refresh." Consider choosing an option in fresh colors, patterns, and textures to create extra visual interest in your space, she adds.
Done in everything from classic percale and washed linen to unique corduroy finishes, the best luxury duvet covers are both stylish and functional—offering cooling, moisture-wicking, and hypoallergenic benefits. Keep reading to shop our 24 favorites.

What should you look for when choosing a duvet cover?
Materials: Today's best luxury duvet covers are typically made with natural fabrics, such as cotton, linen, or even hemp. "Fibers that are naturally grown are always a better choice," Tannen says. On top of generally being more sustainable, "they'll feel softer and stand the test of time," she adds. Still, you may find some luxe options made with synthetic materials—like smooth, polyester-based velvet—or a mix of semi-synthetic fabrics—such as cooling, bamboo-based viscose and highly moisture-wicking, eucalyptus-derived lyocell.
When choosing the right material for you, consider whether you run hot or cold. Warm sleepers should gravitate towards sweat-wicking fabrics, such as viscose, lyocell, linen, and hemp (note that cotton is also breathable, but that it absorbs, rather than wicks away, moisture.) Meanwhile, cold sleepers may be better served with a heavier, warmer fabric, like brushed cotton flannel or sateen.
Deciding on the right material also comes down to your feel and aesthetic preferences. Remember that fabrics like brushed cotton flannel and sateen will always be softer to the touch than coarser fibers like linen. Additionally, more structured materials such as cotton percale will offer a crisp, contemporary look, while relaxed fibers like hemp or linen are great for adding lived-in charm to your space.
Closure: The two most common types of duvet cover closures are buttons and zippers, which Tannen says both work well for securing a duvet cover onto a duvet. Do keep in mind, though: "Button closures make a duvet cover more visually interesting, but they can be more time-consuming to use than a zipper."
How important is thread count?
In short, not very. "One of the biggest myths is that a thread count can tell you everything you need to know about a fabric," says Tannen. "However, this number can't speak to the quality of materials used, the type of chemicals applied to it, or the conditions under which the fabric was made."
Instead, Tannen recommends looking for bedding with certifications like GOTS (or the Global Organic Textile Standard that indicates the use of organic materials and fair labor practices) and OEKO-TEX (which verifies the omission of harmful chemical substances in products).
