Men's ColdGear® Compression Mock

Under Armour has long been a dominant name in the compression wear market, and its ColdGear® material lives up to the hype. "This base layer truly takes winter wear to the next level by keeping me warm, wicking away sweat, and maintaining breathability all at once," says John Thompson, Senior Gear and Commerce Editor. The mock neck design is a smart choice for layering, providing excellent neck protection against the cold and wind on those chilly days.

The OG compression style fits snugly and conforms to the skin. This not only feels athletic and comfortable but also promotes an increase in venous return and improved circulation and prevents chafing. "Whether I'm hitting the gym or braving the cold for an outdoor run, the Under Armour ColdGear® Compression Mock has become an essential part of my cold-weather workout gear," says Thompson.

Men's Intraknit™ Thermal Merino Base Layer Crew

Merino wool is a great choice for cold weather activities because it can absorb up to 30% its weight in moisture. "This top offers everything I could ask for in a base layer," says Thompson. It's flexible, lightweight, and moisture-wicking, ensuring warmth and dryness without feeling weighed down.

"The price tag may be on the higher side for a shirt, but as soon as I felt the buttery, soft, and luxurious fabric against my skin, I understood its value," says Talene Appleton, NASM, Fitness and Commerce Editor. It's a splurge, yes, but it looks and feels so good that you'll be comfortable wearing it on its own for casual activities in or out of the house on chilly days. With a choice of six modern earth tones, there's a color to suit nearly everyone's preference.

Pursue Recycled Polyester Tech Tee

This tee truly lives up to its promises of moisture-wicking and overall comfort. "The seamless construction ensures that I can move freely during my workouts without any annoying seams rubbing against my skin," Thompson explained. The moisture-wicking and 4-way stretch properties have made each run comfortable by keeping things dry and not restricting movement.

This tech tee is lightweight, making it the perfect choice for a loose base layer on moderately cold days when all you need is a sweatshirt on top. On those extra cold days, it layers beautifully over a tight, long-sleeve base layer before throwing an additional mid layer or outer layer on top. "The anti-odor technology is a bonus, as I can stay fresh even after intense workouts," he says. Plus, the fabric still looks brand new after numerous washes, which is a testament to its durability.

SoftSpeed™️ Cold Weather Run Tight

A great pair of tights is a game-changer when it comes to comfort and performance for cold weather runs. The SoftSpeed™️ fabric not only wicks away sweat effectively but also provides a slick outer layer that shields against the wind. "On the inside, it's lightly brushed, keeping my legs warm and my muscles loose throughout my runs," according to Thomspon. The fit of these tights is secure and comfortable, with functional seam detailing and an adjustable drawstring that keeps them in place and minimizes mid-run slippage.

We love the inclusion of iPhone-sized pockets on both sides so there's no need to worry about where to store my essentials during runs. Plus, the reflective branding adds a safety element, making you more visible during low-light conditions. "Whether I wear them as a standalone base layer or under a pair of shorts or joggers, they excel at wicking away sweat and keeping me dry and warm enough to keep running."

Rove Stretch Woven Cargo Pant 32"

These pants from Canadian activewear company MPG Sport quickly became a versatile cornerstone of our athleisure wardrobe. "Whether I'm heading out for a cold weather run, running errands, or just lounging at home, I reach for these pants constantly," Thompson reviewed.

The clean seaming gives them a touch of sophistication and the cargo-style pockets are not only on-trend but also incredibly functional, ensuring that my essentials are always within easy reach. "The adjustable drawstring waist offers a comfortable fit and ensures that the pants won't slip down, whether I'm layering compression pants or shorts underneath or wearing them solo." Despite being light and unlined, the fabric does an excellent job of protecting against the wind and retaining warmth.

Spartan Pants

If the leggings-only look isn't for you (or if you're so cold that you need an extra layer), these pants from Brooks will keep you warm without the bulk. In fact, they're so versatile, we've even layered them atop a base layer and a slim-fitting pair of joggers in super cold weather. They're also lined with fleece for extra comfort.

Key features here for fans of joggers (the pants, not the activity): you can slip these on over your shoes without a struggle thanks to zips at the bottom.

Men's Indie Hoodie

Woven from 100% merino wool and featuring flatlock stitching to prevent chaffing, the Indie Hoodie works wonders as a mid layer and thin outer layer. It's breathable, moisture-wicking, and odor-resistant.

Our favorite feature is the scuba hood that closes all the way around the head, thus preventing cold winds from attacking your ears and neck.

Run Visible Thermal Hoodie

Woven from a DriLayer® threshold fabric that's warm and sweat-wicking, this hoodie (lined with reflective 3M™ Scotchlite) is going to be your favorite go-to for those late night jogs.

We love that it has a hood and integrated thumbholes for additional protection against the cold without adding bulk. Also, secret pockets in the left hand side of the garment fit small essentials like keys and earbuds.

Down for It All Vest

"This vest is another versatile go-to in not only my winter running rotation, but spring and fall, too," explains Appleton. It boasts 700-fill-power goose down feathers, meeting the Responsible Down Standard (RDS), which not only keeps me warm but is also remarkably lightweight. It manages to provide insulation without the bulkiness that often comes with down vests. The stretchy fabric panels incorporated into the design allow for easy movement, too.

"I found the structure and cut of this way more flattering than other puffer vests I tested." When paired with a slim-fitting sweatshirt or a half-zip underneath, it elevates my overall look while keeping me warm. On the coldest days, I've even layered it under an insulated jacket for extra protection in the trunk area. As fall transitions into winter and late winter transitions into spring, it also serves as the perfect outerwear layer. I can easily strip down to a t-shirt and shorts while relying on this vest to provide that extra bit of warmth on top, making it a versatile and essential piece for unpredictable weather.

Climate Jacket

"This jacket offers great protection for a wide range of cold weather activities, and I found it to be exceptionally comfortable and warm for running," Appleton reviewed. "I love the use of 100% recycled padding, strategically placed where it's needed most." Whether I'm embarking on a long distance run or quick sprints around the neighborhood, the Climate Jacket consistently delivers insulation and breathability, quick-drying capabilities, and durability thanks to its unique woven structure.

It's rated to protect against temperatures ranging from 14 to 41 degrees Fahrenheit, though I haven't personally tested it in temperatures below 27 degrees. It boasts waterproof and windproof properties while remaining breathable and lightweight, making it an excellent choice for various outdoor activities. During my runs, I appreciated the moisture-wicking materials and the DWR-coated outer fabric, which repels light rain and keeps me dry. The inclusion of thumb holes adds extra warmth on slightly chilly days, and the four-way stretch fabric ensures I have the flexibility and movement I need for my runs.

NDO 2-in-1 Mittens

These gloves are incredibly effective at keeping your hands tech-friendly and warm on-the-run. They aren't lined, but for when your digits need extra protection, they convert into a toasty mitten. They're functional and versatile all while being super lightweight, so I love to stuff them in my pocket just in case I need them.

They aren't the optimal choice for super cold temperatures or wet conditions, but they are a great low-profile option for most winter runs. Plus, tech-friendly fingertips make it possible to use a touchscreen without having to take these gloves off.

Men's Cold Terrain Lined Gloves

These lightweight gloves are fleece-insulated and feature a silicone print on the palm for extra grip, ensuring that my essentials stay securely in hand while I'm running. Tech-compatible fingertips make navigate my phone without having to take the gloves off effortless. While they may not be super thick, they perform exceptionally well in temperatures in the teens and 20s, providing the necessary warmth.

The gloves are not only moisture-wicking but also water-repellent on the back, and they maintain natural breathability. The only minor downside is that they may not provide complete protection in extremely windy conditions. However, I appreciate the thoughtful addition of reflective strips on the gloves, which enhance safety during low-light street runs on short winter days.

Men's Merino Wool Blend Calf Socks

If you bundle every part of your body up other than your feet, you're going to have a miserable run. These merino wool socks have the perfect amount of stretch, warmth, and breathability.

Though I typically wear ankle socks for running, I found the calf-length design ideal for layering under joggers to protect my ankles on days when I wasn't wearing long compression pants underneath. Considering these socks are made from merino wool, $20 per pair is a fairly reasonable price point.

Peregrine Ice+ 3

With its Vibram outsole and water-resistant upper, this shoe is built to tackle wet conditions. The outsole delivers exceptional grip on snow, ice, and sleet-covered terrain. I've been consistently impressed by the level of traction it provides, ensuring I stay surefooted in challenging wet conditions.

The combination of the PWRRUN midsole and rock plate in the Peregrine Ice+ 3 offers excellent underfoot protection while maintaining flexibility and ground feel—a crucial feature for navigating varied and technical terrains. The Formfit design provides a secure midfoot fit, and a sock liner adds an extra layer of cushioning and comfort. Speedcross 6 Trail Running Shoes

A top-seller and hero item of the brand, the Speedcross 6 is simultaneously one of the most comfortable and durable all-terrain running shoes we've ever tested. Built for rough terrain and slippery conditions, it offers aggressive arch support and a sticky grip, which helps ensure traction when you're walking or running through anything winter throws in your path.

Their Contagrip outsole with chevron-shaped lugs provide even more grip to ground your step, and they're spaced widely apart to prevent mud and debris from getting caked in, meaning they will require less upkeep than your typical trail shoe. The upper is made of anti-debris mesh that also keeps dirt and rocks out. The midsole features Salomon's EnergyCell+ technology which provides responsive cushioning and energy return that you won’t typically get out of a trail shoe.

Bonus: An OrthoLite insole adds even more support and comfort through the arch and under the heel. In our testing, we also feel that its Quicklace system makes it easy to adjust the fit of the shoes on the go, and the lace pocket keeps laces out of the way. Plus, Salomon shoes are really on-trend right now.

What Gear Do I Need for Cold Weather Running?

Cold weather running requires several different pieces of gear but the main point to understand is layering is key. Dr. Italo M. Brown, an emergency physician at Stanford, recommends a classic three-layer setup: A thin base layer, then a warmer mid layer made of wool or fleece, and last an outer shell that "has something that's somewhat waterproof or has a breathable portion of the shell."

Jes Woods, a Nike Running Coach and Brooklyn Trail Club founder, notes that an outer layer is most important, especially if it's snowing outside. "You want something that’s either weather resistant or weatherproof (Gore-Tex). Winter running and snow running is like a game of staying dry." It's also worth noting weather-resistant shoes is also vital, which is why we love this Gore-Tex pair of sneakers from Adidas.

And one last note, use common sense. You're going to need gloves and a hat to cover your ears, as well as proper tights and/or pants. Take consideration of the conditions outside, and then suit up appropriately. It's always better to have more options to chose from than less.

What to Consider When Choosing Winter Running Gear

When searching for running gear to protect against cold, wet, and windy conditions, there are a few key factors to keep in mind. Here's what to look for to find the best cold weather running gear:

Insulation: Gear needs proper insulation to retain just enough heat to keep warm without causing overheating. Thermal materials or fleece-lined fabrics are excellent choices to trap heat while wicking away sweat.

Moisture-wicking properties: Opt for light and quick-drying tech materials that can effectively pull sweat away from your skin to prevent you from getting damp and cold during your run. This helps in regulating your body temperature and avoiding chills. Layering with a lightweight, moisture-wicking base layer and heavier layers on top is a good idea.

Weather resistance: Windproof or wind-resistant outer layers are crucial to shield you from biting cold winds. This is especially important for preventing wind chill when running at higher speeds or near a body of water.

Depending on your local climate, consider water-resistant or waterproof gear to keep you dry in wet conditions. Waterproof shoes and jackets can be particularly beneficial in rain or snow.

Visibility: Since winter days are shorter and darker, choose gear with reflective elements. This enhances your visibility to drivers and other runners, promoting safety during low-light conditions.

Layering: Dress in layers to easily regulate your body temperature. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add an insulating layer for warmth, and finish with a windproof or waterproof outer layer as needed.

Breathability: Ensure your gear allows for adequate ventilation to prevent excessive sweating. Look for products with strategically placed ventilation panels or zippers to help you stay comfortable during intense workouts.

Comfort: Prioritize gear that offers a comfortable fit, allowing for a full range of motion without chafing or discomfort. Pay attention to details like adjustable cuffs, hoods, and waistbands for a personalized fit.

Accessories: Don't forget essential winter accessories like gloves, a hat, and a neck gaiter or scarf to protect your extremities from the cold.
