The 2-Ingredient Vietnamese Snack You Need to Try Right Now
It’s a staple for those hot days!
I am a huge fan of trying different snack staples from various countries and cultures. After all, being Mexican means having my own wide variety of snacks I’ve tried. I remember those hot summers enjoying mangos and elote sprinkled with Tajin. I’ve also enjoyed indulging in other snacks, like the intricate Japanese candy you can get at the grocery store or Dutch stroopwafels.
But this snack from Vietnam has skyrocketed to the top of my list of snacks to try.
The Vietnamese Avocado and Condensed Milk Snack
While the snack is well-regarded in Vietnam, TikTok user @findingjen decided to showcase it to a global audience.
“I often forget that one food combo that may be really popular in one culture might not be so well known in another culture,” she says. “So, might I introduce you to avocados with condensed milk?”
The video then showcases Jen drizzling condensed milk onto a sliced avocado and digging in with a spoon.
“Avocados are often used to make a sweet dish even creamier, so it’s really common to see them in smoothies and dessert,” Jen explains. She points out that while American culture likes to use avocados in a savory setting, she’s only ever had the produce in a sweet way.
And this snack actually has a name!
What Is Sinh Tố Bơ?
Avocados are extremely popular in Southeast Asia, which is why there are technically two renditions of this snack. Sinh Tố Bơ is the name for the Vietnamese avocado smoothie with condensed milk and crushed ice. But if you’re not looking for a smoothie and want something closer to what Jen was showcasing, the Philippines actually has a name for it: abukado lamaw.
Instead of putting everything in a blender, you mix spoonfuls of avocado, condensed milk, and crushed ice. Both renditions are extremely popular in the summertime and provide a much-needed refreshing cooldown when temperatures skyrocket. Plus, they’re just so darn good!
