All clear given after suspicious package detonated at Licht Judicial Complex. What to know.

PROVIDENCE – The Licht Judicial Complex on Benefit Street was evacuated Tuesday morning due to an unspecified "security concern."

"The Licht Judicial Complex has been deemed safe for reentry. The security concern, an unattended suitcase found at the corner of Benefit and College streets, has been detonated by authorities," courts spokeswoman Lexi Kriss said in an email around 12:14 p.m., nearly two hours after news of the evacuation surfaced.

Suspicious package detonated

At around 10:30 a.m., the scene around the courthouse was pushed further back by police as a suitcase near the building was moved, according to witnesses on scene.

At around 11:20 a.m., the suitcase was detonated by the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

Thanks extended

"The Judiciary would like to extend its deep appreciation to the Rhode Island State Police, Providence Police Department and the Rhode Island Division of Sheriffs, who collaborated with the Judiciary to work swiftly to address the situation at hand," Kriss said.

The judiciary directed further questions to state police Lt. Col. Robert Creamer.
