Library Lines: Celebrate Earth Week with fun activities

The Earth Week Plus Expo is happening at the library 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, April 20. Earth Day activities include make-and-take birdhouses, hummingbird feeders, seed planting, rock painting, nature art projects, create a worm home and more.

4-H will have a table offering various kids’ activities. While you are here, investigate live amphibians, turtles, snakes, birds nests, and sea lamprey. Pet a chicken, discover skulls and learn about alternative energy. The library offers an elevator for easy access to the lower level. This event is free and open to the public! Follow Earth Week Plus Expo Northern Michigan on Facebook or visit earthweekplus.org for information on the many mini adventures offered in April through June.

E-Waste will be accepted 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, April 20, in front of the NEMSCA Head Start Building, formerly the West Elementary School located on Pine St. Electronic products that are unwanted, not working or outdated are considered e-waste. Most electronics contain toxic materials such as beryllium, cadmium, mercury and lead. When dumped in landfills these toxins cause serious environmental risks to our soil, water, air and wildlife which can then negatively affect humans. Recycle computers, cables, small home appliances, used printer cartridges, household batteries, and almost anything with a cord are accepted for free. There is a minimal charge for recycling CRT TVs depending on the size of the television. Kickstart your spring cleaning and dispose of those unwanted electronics in an environmentally safe way.

The Youth Art Show will be on display in our Gallery located on our lower level beginning April 24-May 1. Visit during regular library hours to view the inspiring art created by local youth. The opening reception will take place 4-6 p.m. April 24 in our Neuss room. Refreshments will be served, all are welcome to attend.

How often do you visit the library? How would you rate the quality of services we provide? What is the best thing about your community library? If you could change one thing about your library, what would that be? Please provide feedback by completing a short survey. We have paper surveys on a table as you enter the building. You can also visit our website cheboyganlibrary.org and click the link to complete the short five-minute survey. Our Facebook page has a link to the survey also. Complete our survey by May 10th. Thanks to the University of Michigan School of Information, the Library of Michigan and the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Technology Act for providing this survey so we may better serve our community.

At 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, don’t miss your opportunity to meet Michigan Notable Book author John Smolens at the library! Smolens will discuss "A Cold, Hard Prayer." Here’s what people are saying about his latest novel.

His fiction deepens the meanings of place and people, where we come from, how we got here, who we are.” ~ Thomas Lynch.

The genius of this novel is an enthralling descent into the dark byways of the criminal mind." ~ Washington Post

A fine writer with a profound knowledge of human behavior gone awry.” ~ Jim Harrison.

Beautifully and thoughtfully written...it’s bound to become part of Michigan’s folk history.” ~ Bonnie Jo Campbell

With his portrait of a bygone America. Smolens has written an intelligent, often troubling warning disguised as a first-rate, thriller as though Sinclair Lewis has fused with Alan Furst.” ~ Tom Bissell
