For the third time in program history, the Lexington High School volleyball team will play for a state championship.

The Wildcats defeated powerhouse Wando 3-1 (25-21, 25-21, 18-25, 25-17) on the road Tuesday to win the Class 5A Lower State championship. Lexington will face Mauldin for the state title Saturday at Dreher High School.

Mauldin defeated Dorman, 3-1, in the Upper State championship. It is the Mavericks’ first championship appearance.

Lexington’s two other state championship appearances came in 2009 and 2019. The Wildcats won sets one, two and four Tuesday in the win over Wando.

The Wildcats finished second in Region 4-5A and were in the Lower State bracket of the postseason. Lexington is 28-12 on the season and won three of their four playoff matches on the road, including Tuesday night.

Lexington was one of three Midlands teams in the state semifinals. Gray Collegiate played in the 2A Upper State championship on Tuesday and lost 3-0 to Liberty.

Gilbert lost to Philip Simmons on Monday in the 3A Lower State championship.
