Lexington man survives one crash but is killed in another on SC road, coroner says

A Lexington man survived one crash but was killed in another on a highway running through South Carolina, the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office said Monday.

Sr Ezu Resuda, 23, died early Saturday morning, Coroner Darnell Hartwell said.

Resuda was involved in a collision on Interstate 26 and exited a vehicle to contact authorities when he was struck by a 2007 Toyota Corolla, officials said.

Resuda died at the scene, according to Hartwell.

He was considered a pedestrian, said Cpl. David Jones of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The fatal crash happened at about 3 a.m., at the 203 mile marker in the eastbound lanes of I-26, according to Jones. That’s in Ladson, near the Charleston County line.

Jones said the Toyota driver was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.

Information about the initial collision was not available.

The deadly crash is being investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office.

Through Sunday, 92 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,075 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least nine people have died in Berkeley County crashes this year, including two pedestrians, DPS data shows. Last year, 49 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
