Lexington man injured, one dead in head on collision in Newberry County

The driver of a Ford pickup truck died after colliding head first with a semi truck on Friday evening.

The crash took place around 8:40 p.m. in Newberry County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

A 2018 Ford pickup truck driving north on SC-39 near Brannon Road, one mile outside of Chappells, when it crossed the center line of the state highway and collided “head on” with the Freightliner semi truck, said highway patrol Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway.

The driver of the pickup, a 68-year-old resident of Cross Hill, was taken to Newberry County Memorial Hospital where he “passed away,” Ridgeway said.

The driver of the semi truck, a 40 year-old resident of Lexington, was injured in the crash. They were also transported by EMS to the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
