Letters: Help Tiverton celebrate the Semiquincentennial

Help Tiverton celebrate the Semiquincentennial

I am writing this letter to your publication to advise the citizens of Tiverton of the upcoming national celebration in the year 2026, the SEMIQUINCENTENNIAL, which will mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the "Declaration of Independence." This celebration also will be observed throughout Rhode Island, as well as within our town.

The makeup of this commission in Tiverton will be one member from the Town Council ( Michael Burk) and several appointees from selected town committees/commissions. Also, at this time, there will be three public members (electors). Myself and Christine Costa have volunteered to join this commission. One more public member is needed to be appointed.

Anyone interested in joining this effort should review the Town Council's resolution regarding this commission. A potential prospect to this commission is expected to offer his/her efforts to promote this celebration. A brief quote follows: " ... go inspire all Rhode Islanders, and in particular the residents of Tiverton, to learn from historic, social, legal, cultural and political forces that caused the American Revolution and influenced its course and outcomes, and to build a strong community for the future."

If you have an interest in participating in this commission, contact the Town Clerk at the Tiverton Town Hall.

Peter M. Moniz, Tiverton
