Letters to the Editor: Trump isn't bad and Biden isn't great

Trump isn't bad and Biden isn't great

I cannot believe Bob Bird’s letter to the editor titled “Reality check.” He urges the reader to “face the facts” and then proceeds to list 21 (supposed) facts about Donald Trump, all of which are negative and none of which is sourced.

It’s almost impossible to construct a response to such unsubstantiated gibberish!

Mr. Bird concludes with “... vote for Biden in November ... common decency, competency in the White House, the rule of law, civil rights and the Constitution are at stake.”

I wonder if Mr. Bird is planning a future article wherein he documents evidence that the current POTUS has been competent in both foreign and domestic/economic affairs. I’d be curious to read Mr. Bird’s thoughts on Biden’s competency level for the next 4.5 years should he win in November.

To those who miss the points of good-faith debate

In response to Michael John DeWaard letter, I need to start with a heavy sigh. Michael conveniently observes “Trump certainly has faults” but not insurrection. Wow! This dismisses:

  • Election subversion, both federal and state

  • 37 felonies related to the removal of classified documents

  • Falsification of business records in N.Y.

  • Defamation and sexual assault in N.Y.

  • Fraud in N.Y.

In exchange, Michael wants suggestions to solve:

  • the border crisis (latest proposed solution blown up by Republicans)

  • violent crimes by illegals (studies show illegals tend to be more law-abiding)

  • fentanyl deaths (not a crisis among legal drug users)

  • enriching Iran (by letting them have their own money in exchange for freeing Americans)

  • a divided country (no Republican reached out to take Joe’s hand … it’s called compromise)

  • high-interest rates (this is up to the Fed; they don’t work for Joe, nor Donald)

  • inflation 14% since January 2021 (we live in a world economy — this is not just a U.S. thing)

  • out-of-control spending (Donald added $8.4 trillion during a period where he originally promised to pay off the national debt. Michael, you need to tell me whether you want to cut Medicare/Medicaid, Social Security or Defense because that's overwhelmingly the bulk of the budget.)

  • crime rate (the Federal Violent Crime Rate has been falling, although there seems to be an increase in FRAUD and ELECTION SUBVERSION)

  • lastly, credit card debt (Michael, “controlled spending” starts at home)

Sadly, I know that anyone who feels motivated to quote the quackery of Dr. Phil will totally miss the point.

Just winning not good enough

Folks in Ottawa Couty know me. Three times elected as mayor of Hudsonville, a city that is one of the best-run cities in the state with a growing reputation as one of the best places to live, work and raise a family in the state.

There is no doubt my politics and drive for professional leadership and good governance; check my record. The scourge of Ottawa Impact and the cult of Joe Moss has done immeasurable damage to our county government. Our county government has become dysfunctional, failing the residents and squandering money. Nothing good comes from OI and Moss’ leadership as my county commissioner and the chair.

We need to turn out the vote at the primary on Aug. 6. Winning is not good enough; we need to make a bold and loud statement. We need to win with 80%; put OI to bed permanently.

If you are a Republican alarmed at the destructive intolerant mean politics of OI, then challenge your Republican County delegate and find out if they are OI. Did they take the OI oath of loyalty required by Moss? File yourself to be a delegate (deadline with the county clerk to file is May 7), campaign a bit and be part of the fix. No OI in our party or in any elected position should be tolerated. Maybe you have not followed politics before, but I encourage you to do so now. All politics are local, and Ottawa County is ground zero for the national issue of restoring civility in politics. We need professional leadership focused on good governance to advance our community.

For the record, I’m neither a RINO nor a MAGA, I disdain labels. Trump is my dog in the presidential race even with his exaggerated character flaws. Contrary to name-calling and lies by OI I have never encouraged Democrats to cross over at the primary. Vote for your party. Vote for your convictions.
