Dallas Cowboys victory over Seattle Seahawks proves ... absolutely nothing.

The most defeated, resigned, apathetic cynic should have a hard time saying anything other than the Dallas Cowboys are one of the better teams in the NFL.

Amid a rain of yellow flags and referees looking for quality, streaming TV time, the Cowboys defeated the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday night to improve to 9-3.

Try to disregard how the Cowboys won this game 41-35 and zero in on the 9-3 part. The nine wins is tied for the second most in the NFL.

On Thursday night, the Cowboys finally played a decent team, and they beat ‘em. Again, it is really important to disregard how it all looked.

This one isn’t going in the Kimbell Art Museum. More likely the Museum of Bad Art (the MOBA is a real place).

Because the defense made, at times, Seattle quarterback Geno Smith look like Patrick Mahomes. And the defense made Seattle receiver DK Metcalf look a lot like DK Metcalf.

While we are deliberately ignoring certain parts of the Cowboys’ win, do everything in your power not to focus on the fact that head coach Mike McCarthy continues his streak for bizarre play calling inside the red zone, on fourth down, etc.

The Cowboys got away with one on Thursday night to win by six points.

The Cowboys have five games remaining in their regular-season schedule, and nothing happened on Thursday night to think they won’t do anything other than win 10 games for a third straight year, and make the playoffs for the third straight season.

The Cowboys have not achieved those feats since 1994-’95’-’96.

“We need games like this. To get to where you want to go you have to win these types of games,” McCarthy said. “Hang in there and keep playing.”

This is all positive.

There is just one tiny, minuscule, small, fleck of an issue. Not a crisis. Just an issue.

We have seen this before.

We saw this in 2021, when the Cowboys started the season 8-4 en route to a 12-5 finish. And a loss in the wild card game, at home against San Francisco.

We saw this again in 2022, when the Cowboys started the season 9-3 en route to a 12-5 finish. And a loss in the divisional round, at San Francisco.

Here we are in 2023, and the Cowboys are 9-3. With remaining games against Philadelphia, Buffalo, Miami, Detroit and Washington, a third straight 12-5 finish is beginning to feel likely.

Three straight 12-5 seasons is a great run.

This regular season, much like the previous two, is made possible due in large part to the play of quarterback Dak Prescott.

Against Seattle, Dak continued riding his heater; he threw for 299 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. He promised to make ball security a priority this season, and the interception issue has not been an issue.

If he keeps this up, he will/should be a finalist for the NFL regular season MVP award.

Through 12 games this season, the man is afire; he is completing about 70 percent of his passes for 3,234 yards with 26 touchdown passes against only six interceptions. Name the passing stat, and Dak is near the top in the NFL.

“I put a lot into this game. I prepare my ass off,” Dak said after the game. “Numbers are numbers. They are going to be that way. ...

“The reason I’m playing the way I am right now — the guys around me.”

He’s also not that far off from what he’s done through the first 12 games of each of the previous two regular seasons, when he’s played.

In 2021, Dak played in 10 of the team’s first 12 games; he completed 69 percent of his passes for 2,932 yards with 22 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

In 2022, Dak played six of the Cowboys’ first 12 games; he completed 68 percent of his passes for 1,393 yards with 10 touchdowns and six picks.

Dak is currently playing the best ball of what continues to be a solid regular-season career.

By this point, much like Tony Romo before him, Dak has repeatedly demonstrated he’s a winning regular-season player.

Judgment Day begins not in December, but January.

Both he and the Cowboys are doing everything possible to put themselves in a position to finally win the games this team, and this fan base, covets.

But they haven’t done it. What they are doing is what they have done in each of the past two seasons.

Because the Cowboys are a good team with a good quarterback.

“Dak is playing great ball,” McCarthy said. “We are playing with a really good pace. We want to attack. You can only do it with a championship-caliber quarterback, and Dak is that guy.”

Even the most defeated, resigned, apathetic cynic would have a hard time saying anything other than the Dallas Cowboys are one of the better teams in the NFL. They were in 2021. They were in 2022.

We just don’t know if here in 2023 it will translate into January and February.
