How to Watch 'The Idol'HBO

Following a months-long bumpy press tour, The Idol, HBO’s controversial new series starring Lily-Rose Depp and Abel "The Weeknd" Tesfaye, is finally here. The six-part mini-series premiered on June 4th with lukewarm streaming numbers, garnering a mix of reviews ranging from "WTF is this?" to "I can’t wait to see what happens next."

Prior to the premiere, The Idol was written about for its reportedly toxic on-set culture. After debuting at the Cannes Film Festival last month, it's also received a trough of negative reviews. Did that stop people from tuning in? The network was counting on a big fat no, but we’re not so sure. According to Variety, the first episode pulled in 913,000 views. Meanwhile, a clip of BLACKPINK star Jennie dancing on the show has garnered 2.6 million views and counting.

Given the star-studded cast, it's possible that The Idol will become a vessel for viral internet moments, but that doesn't mean HBO's splashy new outing is in the gutter. There’s still a chance for the plot to pull in more viewers and hold the audience’s attention.

If you need a quick refresher, The Idol follows a pop star named Jocelyn (Depp) who tries to reinvent herself following a mental breakdown. But her plans to reshape her image and regain the public’s admiration are complicated when she meets Tedros (Tesfaye), a self-help guru with questionable intentions. While under Tedros's influence, Jocelyn embarks on a salacious rebrand that could change the course of her life forever. As Jocelyn's creative director, Xander (Troye Sivan), asks in the trailer, "When was the last truly fucking nasty, nasty bad pop-girl?" Well, reader, there's still time to find out.
