Let’s go, Chiefs: Late Sunday night games keep Kansas City moving slow Monday morning

Wrap it up

After the Chiefs game Sunday night, Nov. 6, my daughter texted, “Phew! I’m exhausted.” I texted back, “Me, too.”

I was a poll worker last week, and quite a few people came in wearing Chiefs gear. I’d ask, “Did you watch the game Sunday?” The usual answer was some variation of, “Yes. And it was exhausting.”

Chiefs, when you play Sunday night at Los Angeles, please try to get way ahead early so your fans aren’t so tired for work the next day.

Remembered right

Kudos to the organizers of and participants in the Veterans Day Ceremony at the National WWI Memorial and Museum this past Friday. The American Legion Band of Greater Kansas City played the inspirational music of the armed forces. Matthew Naylor, president and CEO of the museum, greeted the audience, which included veterans of all services.

And there were stirring remarks from a number of dignitaries. The word “democracy” was spoken several times. Retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Michelle Johnson gave an excellent keynote address. The traditions of the presentation of colors, placement of the POW/MIA cover, singing of our national anthem and placement of the wreath were observed.

This annual ceremony is a very special one, filled with remembrance, tribute and gratitude.

Honor first

Former Kansas Gov. Bill Graves’ crossing party lines to endorse Laura Kelly is a classic example of what an outstanding leader he is. He puts what is good for the citizenry ahead of what’s good for his party. (Nov. 14, 1A, “Why did Schmidt lose Kansas governor’s race to Kelly?”)

It would be great if more men and women in public life would follow Graves’ example.

Stated well

We pray and trust that you beat PTSD, Jason Kander. Your Sunday guest commentary, “Authoritarians learned US democracy is hard to kill” rivaled and bested a similar message on the same page: “Election results should move both parties to introspection” by George F. Will. (22A)

Sure, George challenges us to use the dictionary. Sure, George makes me reread his sentences for meaning. And yet! Your easy style appeals to our common sense. I’m willing to work together with you and similar-minded practical centrists to beat back the authoritarians.

Question authority. Be well, Jason, and continue writing for us.

Is this the end?

Have Republicans reached a tipping point with Donald Trump?

- Jim Kilen, Kansas City

Or is this the end?

Republicans built Johnson County, and now Democrats will destroy it with the election of Mike Kelly to chairman of the Johnson County Board of Commissioners.

The final count

I have yet to hear a discussion of how reapportionment earlier this year affected the midterm elections. California lost a seat and Texas gained two. Other states gained and lost as well.

It would be interesting to see how that played out since the question of who controls the House is still being played out.
