The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Won’t Get DLC

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was a fantastic game — one of the best games to be released this year, and easily one of the best games in the Zelda series. Despite its massive success, having sold over 18.5 million units in just a couple weeks following release, Nintendo seemingly won’t be adding onto the game.

In an interview with Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma on Famitsu, as translated by VGC, it seems like there won’t be any post-launch DLC for Tears of the Kingdom, unlike previous game Breath of the Wild. Apparently, Aonuma feels like the world featured in both games has been sufficiently explored, so it’s time to move onto the next big thing.

“At this time, we are not planning to release additional content,” Aonuma reportedly said, “We feel like we have already fully explored and exhausted the gameplay possibilities in this world.”

That’s not necessarily the end of this Link and Zelda though, as Aonuma also said that if there’s a “compelling reason” to return to the world, the team may decide to do so. In the meantime though, the Zelda development team is set on offering a “completely new experience” in future games.

Breath of the Wild received two waves of DLC following its launch in 2017. The first, The Master Trials, added a new game mode called the Trial of the Sword, which had players running through a gauntlet of 45 rooms filled with enemies, as well as a more difficult Master Mode difficulty.

The Champions’ Ballad was the second wave of DLC, and added new story sequences, a new dungeon, new shrines, and more. It was generally the better received of the two, since it had a big focus on story and featured everyone’s favorite musician Kass, but both waves of DLC were met with a warm reception from fans.

Of course, just because Aonuma says there are no plans for DLC doesn’t mean that’s absolutely set in stone. Nintendo has a habit of saying it has “no plans” for something and then announcing it not long after. We’ll have to wait and see though — we’re 4 months removed from the game at this point, and most players have probably moved on by now.

In the meantime, if you’re hungry for more Zelda, Nintendo did recently release two of the best Zelda games on the Switch. Give them a go — you won’t be disappointed.
