Lee’s Summit West, Rockhurst among Friday’s winners in Missouri high school football

Here’s a recap of some of the top Missouri high school football action around the Kansas City metro on Friday night.

Platte County 43, Smithville 36

Platte County and Smithville put on a show as expected, but the Pirates were the ones who walked away smiling.

Platte County (2-0) ended a two-game skid against rival Smithville (1-1) in incredible fashion, losing the lead and regaining it all in the last minute.

Smithville, ranked No. 11 in 810 Varsity’s Top 25, looked to have the game all but won. A Jake Shaffer TD pass to Jet Coleman and ensuing two-point conversion, from Shaffer to Coleman as well, gave the Warriors a 36-35 lead with 51 seconds to play.

But that didn’t matter to the No. 13 Pirates, as they marched right down the field. Less than 30 seconds later, they found the end zone on a 23-yard pass from Rocco Marriott to Braiden Stevens.

“We’ve had two weeks where it’s gut wrenching,” Platte County coach Bill Utz said. “We’ve been blessed enough to be on the good side of it. I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

It was back-and-forth the entire way with six lead changes and four ties. The largest lead for either team was seven points.

Platte County looks for a third straight win at North Kansas City (1-1) next week. Smithville hosts this year’s Highway 92 Rivalry game with Kearney (1-1).

Rockhurst 47, Blue Springs South 10

Rockhurst has looked the part of one of the top teams in the metro, scorching another Class 6 team Friday night.

The Hawklets, ranked No. 5 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, steamrolled Blue Springs South, 47-10, to improve to 2-0. Rockhurst opened the season with a 31-0 mauling of Raymore-Peculiar in the opener.

Rockhurst relied on its running game. Senior Aidan Ryan rushed for touchdowns of 1, 7 and 53 yards to help the Hawklets build a 24-7 lead.

From there it was all Rockhurst. A 46-yard pass from quarterback Ethan Hansen to wideout Myles Carson set up a Tommy Coppinger one-yard dive and a 32-7 margin, 32-10 at halftime.

“They’re upset they gave up 10 points in the first half, and that’s the mark of a great team,” Rockhurst coach Kelly Donohoe said. “This is a group that deserves to be good — they work at it and care for each other. It’s a lot of fun right now.”

Hansen later connected with Maeson Tunley for a 20-yard score, and Ryan added a 70-yard touchdown carry for his fourth of the night. Ryan finished with 169 yards on 15 carries.

Rockhurst will play host to No. 2 Liberty North next Friday.

Maryville 50, Harrisonville 12

The Spoofhounds bounced back from a Week 1 loss by hammering Harrisonville 50-12.

Maryville, ranked No. 7 in Class 3, got big games from Delton Davis and Derek Quinlin.

Davis scored on a 31-yard run, caught a 22-yard touchdown and returned a kickoff for a score after Harrisonville scored late in the second half.

Quinlin passed for a pair of scores and ran for another for Maryville (1-1).

Harrisonville, tied for No. 7 in the Class 4 poll, fell to 0-2.

William Chrisman 20, Truman 14

The Wagon Wheel will stay on the north end of Noland Road.

The Bears broke a tie on a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Declan Watson to beat Truman in the annual rivalry game that is connected to a traveling trophy.

This is the eighth year in a row Chrisman has beaten the Patriots (0-2). Truman got a pick-six from Market Williams.

Grain Valley 49, Grandview 28

The No. 2-ranked team in Class 5 endured a battle early but pulled away for the win.

The Eagles led 21-20 in the first half while struggling to stop the Bulldogs’ rushing attack. But then Ty Williams and Noah Olah took over in the second half.

Williams finished with 169 rushing yards and two touchdowns, including a 45-yard run, while Olah added a 35-yard run score to make it 35-20.

Both players finished with three touchdowns for the Eagles (2-0). Williams and Olah each caught a touchdown pass as well from quarterback Sal Caldarella, who finished with 134 passing yards and three touchdowns.

Lee’s Summit West 28, Blue Springs 13

The Titans beat the Wildcats for the third straight season.

Quincy Torry ran for three touchdowns for West (2-0).

Torry scored twice in the first half and wide receiver Adam Wooldridge hauled in a 70-yard touchdown strike from Caden Carter to give the Titans a 21-3 lead at the break.

The Wildcats fell to 1-1.

Liberty North 31, Liberty 7

The Eagles’ defense was unstoppable as Liberty North shut down the Blue Jays 31-7 for a fifth straight win over the crosstown rivals.

Liberty North’s Tillman Martin connected with senior wideout Keelan Smith for the first two Eagles TDs. The first came on the far sideline as Smith went past his defender. He turned around and the ball dropped perfectly into his hands as he landed into the end zone.

The second score came in the second quarter as Smith streaked down the middle of the field. The Nebraska commit caught the perfectly weighted pass and went untouched into the end zone.

The Eagles’ lead was cut in half as Martin was intercepted with only a couple minutes left in the first half. Liberty’s Grady Coppinger jumped the route and took it 60 yards for a pick-six.

Those would be the only points of the game for Liberty.

“I was proud of our effort. We had some mistakes offensively, but I am super proud of our defense,” Liberty North coach Andy Lierman said. “Those guys played lights out tonight.”
