Leave the World Behind: Julia Roberts Gets Bad/Apocalyptic News From Mahershala Ali in Netflix Thriller Trailer

Julia Roberts get an ominous knock at the cabin from Mahershala Ali in a trailer for Leave the World Behind, Netflix’s movie adaptation of the the 2020 novel by Rumaan Alam.

Written and directed by Mr. Robot‘s Sam Esmail, the film is due to hit Netflix on Friday, Dec. 8 (following a brief theatrical run).

The premise: Amanda (played by Roberts), husband Clay (Ethan Hawke) and their kids (Everything’s Gonna Be Okay‘s Charlie Evans and United States of Al‘s Farrah Mackenzie) are enjoying a family vacation weekend at a rented home when two strangers — G.H. (played by Ali) and his daughter Ruth (Industry‘s Myha’la fka Myha’la Herrold) — arrive in the night, bearing news of a mysterious cyberattack and seeking refuge in the house they claim is theirs.

The two families then must reckon with a looming disaster that grows more terrifying by the minute, forcing everyone to come to terms with their places in an apparently collapsing world.

The movie’s cast also includes the ubiquitous Kevin Bacon in, per the trailer above, full Creepy Local Guy Who Apparently Knows Things mode.
