What we learned from the Evansville city track and field meet, results and more

EVANSVILLE — For the third year in a row, the North High School Huskies swept the Evansville city track and field meet.

The boys completed a four-peat Friday evening at Central Stadium; North High School became the first program to win four or more consecutive meets since Harrison did it from 2010-18. The girls had their first three-peat in program history as well as one of their highlights was a record-breaking performance — more on that in a bit.

Here are a few takeaways from the city meet.

North's Layne twins dominate at city meet

Huskies coaches Wes Camp and Lonnie Wilson had high praise for sophomores De'Janay and De'Amontay Layne. The praise they are receiving is justified as they continue to solidify themselves among the city's top sprinters.

De'Amontay won the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.19 seconds. De'Janay, meanwhile, won four events overall and two as an individual. She clinched the 100 and 200-meter dash titles in 12.22 and 24.58 seconds, respectively. Her performance in the 200 broke the meet record set last season by current Purdue sprinter and two-time Bosse state champ Alexia Smith.

"I just felt good," De'Janay said. "I expected to get 24 (seconds), but I didn't expect to break the record."

"Any time you can break an Alexia Smith record, you're doing something," Camp added. "Alexia Smith (is someone) I have the utmost respect for. That's definitely a record that's not easy to get by any means."

Reitz's distance runners also remain strong

Jackson Nolan, Sawyer Mossberger and Cordelia Hoover were not in attendance for the second night of the city meet.

The Reitz distance standouts were competing in Carmel along with many other elite runners and in front of multiple college coaches. Nolan and Mossberger, who are both juniors, did win city titles Thursday running on the Panthers' 4x800 relay team. But the multiple-time cross country state qualifiers now aim to punch their tickets to Bloomington for the first time in track.

Another top cross-country runner for Reitz, junior Brice Johnson, won two events throughout the city meet. He was the 1,600-meter champion with a time of 4:31.98 and was the 4x800 anchor (8:14.72).

"These guys are just really talented," Reitz coach Jim Brinkmeyer said. "Coach (Mark) King does a great job working with these guys. He coaches them in cross country, runs their workouts and works with them during track. He has them year round and does a great job."

Memorial still thrives with sprinting, distance

More city champions came from the Tigers in the boys 100-meter dash and girls 1,600-meter run.

Former standouts Ray Brodie and Jacqueline Brasseale won these respective events during their state placing seasons in 2022 — Brodie finished as the state champion in the 100. Senior Dasmon Johnson and sophomore Allison Golba has seen and admired their success up close.

"I watched (Jacqueline) growing up because my brother (Andrew) was in her grade," Golba said. "Seeing her do that good meant that I could to the same."

Memorial’s Allison Golba wins the girls 1600 meter run with a time of 5:27 during the 2024 City Track and Field Meet at Central High School Friday, April 19, 2024.

She and Johnson can also call themselves city champions after winning titles in 1,600 (5:27.66) and 100 (11.04 seconds), respectively.

"It was a very competitive race," Johnson said of winning the 100. "I had two great runners next in me with (North's) Kaleb Harris and Cainen Northington. I knew they were going to bring a tough fight every single race. I got out of the blocks and got the job done at the finish line."

Harrison strives for even more success in '24

Warriors coach Adam Shoulders had a message for his team before the season.

He wanted this to be a "new year" for his team. Harrison athletics has been trending upward as of late with basketball becoming sectional champions and baseball transforming into an SIAC contender.

"I love the direction we're going in as a school," Shoulders said. "Success brings success. And I think basketball might have lit a fire under a bit. I think that's going to continue for years and years."

Junior Jay Summitt is helping to propel his team's success. He was one of basketball's top players and its third-leading scorer. He also won the city's high (6-05) and long jump titles (20-10.5).

Not bad considering this is his first year doing the event.

"It's pretty nice. It's a good feel," Summitt said. "It's just a start, though. Got to get to sectional and keep going from there."
